Orediggers' NCAA Run Halted In PKs

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - #11 Colorado Mesa won a penalty kick shootout to advance over #25 Colorado School of Mines after a 0-0 double overtime match in the NCAA Second Round.

The Orediggers (14-4-2) outshot the Mavericks (14-4-1) 26-15 in the match, but neither side found the net as Brian Doherty made five saves and Connor Durant three in what was officially a scoreless draw.

Durant made three saves in the penalty kick shootout to propel CMU to the Sweet 16, 3-2.

Mines led CMU 10-4 on first-half shots as Lucas King had an early free kick chance sail over the crossbar, and his close-range shot was blocked in the 27th minute in the Orediggers' best chance of the game to that point. George Marchant forced a save on a tiki-taka run that ended in his wide-open shot in the 29th minute, and Mesa's best chance of the first half came in the 40th minute when Ramses Atahualpa headed a high deflected shot over the bar from eight yards.

Chances were at premium early in the second half, but Doherty kept it scoreless with a fantastic fingertip save of Gabriel Peres in the 70th minute as the Mavericks began to pick up the pace. Mines countered with a double chance by Tristan Semelsberger that ended with him shooting over the bar, and Semelsberger drew a foul at the top of the box that King sent just left on the free kick in the 77th minute. Vaughn Simpson headed high off King's long free kick in the 83rd minute, and Doherty made a terrific tip-save denial over the bar on Peres' shot with under two minutes left in regulation.

Mesa nearly conceded the golden goal when Durant mishandled a throw-in early in the first overtime, but a defender managed to knock the ball out for a corner, and Chris Seery's top-of-the-box chance out of a scramble was deflected just wide right in the 95th minute. CMU's Raymond Jackson shot well high late for the Mavs' only serious chance of the period.

The Mavericks had a Colton Shafer chance early in the second OT, and Doherty stopped David Peters in the 104th minute. Mines had a free kick to the side of the box a minute later that resulted in two blocked shots before Azad Iliozer ended up putting it over the top. Daisuke Takanaka's sliding attempt barely missed with 1:39 left.

In PKs, both Semelsberger and Alec Fronapfel converted their first attempts, but Durant saved three of the next four penalties while Doherty had one stop, and the Mavericks won the shootout 3-2.

NOTABLES
- Mines was making its 10th consecutive NCAA appearance. Despite their long conference rivalry, the Orediggers and Mavericks had never played in the NCAA Championship tournament.
- Semelsberger led Mines with five shots and King had four. Shafer and Peres had four apiece for CMU.
- It was the first time Mines had gone to penalties since the 2019 RMAC Tournament final when they clinched it 7-6 over Regis. The Orediggers had not been to kicks in the NCAA tournament since 2017 against St. Edwards, advancing 6-5 after a scoreless draw.
- Mesa moves on to face top-seeded Cal State LA, a 2-1 winner over CSU Pueblo.
