#20 Mines Survives PKs To Advance

GOLDEN, Colo. - #20 Colorado School of Mines survived penalty kicks to advance in the RMAC Tournament after a 2-2 quarterfinal draw with Westminster at Stermole Stadium.

The third-seeded Orediggers (12-3-4) move on to face second-seeded UCCS, a 1-0 winner over MSU Denver, in the semifinals Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Colorado Springs.

Mines won the shootout 3-0 after a save by Sierra Roth and two Griffin misses combined with PK makes by Jordan Barnhart, Colleen Tyrrell, and the clincher from Eliot Edwards. Reese McDermott and Barnhart scored in normal time, but the Griffins (10-2-5) battled back twice from deficits to send the game to overtime.

Mines found an early marker when McDermott scored her team-leading eighth of the year by beating her defender and firing a superb left-footed finish to the upper right in the 11th minute. Alexa Maple's corner kick curled into the goal and off Roth in the 23rd minute to level, however, and the first half ended 1-1 despite Mines holding an 8-4 shots lead.

A set piece provided the Orediggers with the lead again in the 65th minute. Tyrrell had a free kick chance from near midfield and sent it into the box, where Barnhart played the offside trap perfectly to slip behind the defense and tap home for the lead. That sent Westminster into an all-out attack to save their season, and it paid off when Sage Stott deflected in Kara Dickey's cross in the 84th minute to make it 2-2. Mines nearly won it twice late as Tyrrell hit the crossbar on a free kick with two minutes left, and McDermott also hit the bar on the game's final shot with 10 seconds remaining.

In overtime, WC's Elaina Pierce hit the crossbar 1:47 in before Roth saved the putback attempt by Cassidy Orr, and Landry Corbett put a late shot on goal. Roth made another save off Orr in the second overtime.

In penalties, Mines went first and Barnhart converted her chance before Roth saved Aimee Kurfurst's attempt to set the tone in the first round. Tyrrell made her attempt before Madison Schmidt missed wide left, and after AK Ford's try was saved by Kelsea Cracroft, Maple rang the crossbar to give Mines a chance to finish. Edwards left no doubt with her attempt as she ended it 3-0 in the fourth round.
