Day One Results

GOLDEN, Colo. –
Oredigger junior Sophia Collins broke the Colorado School of Mines Women's Track & Field team record in the long jump on Friday evening as Mines opened its Front Range #2 event inside Steinhauer Fieldhouse.

Collins' leap of 5.98 meters (19-7.50) not only gave her the program record, but it provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Championships and ranks #2 in the nation this season. Collins entered the weekend ranked 18th in NCAA Division II in the long jump after her mark of 5.60 meters (18-4.5) last week. The Colorado Springs native launched herself over a foot further on Friday to claim the top mark in Oredigger history by one centimeter. Michelle Rigsby was the previous record holder with a mark of 5.97 meters (19-7.0) in 2015 at the Joe Davies Open.

Two other Oredigger women joined Collins with NCAA provisional standards as Hannah Miller and Avery Herbold both cleared bars in the pole vault. Miller earned her first mark of the year by hitting 3.83 meters (12-6.75) which put her in a tie for 12th in the nation. The true freshman Herbold built on her momentum from last week and cleared 3.68 meters (12-0.75) to move into a tie for 24th in DII. Herbold also took sole possession of second place in the Oredigger indoor record book with her performance. Lexye Wood rounded out the top performances for Mines' women as she joined Collins in the long jump and hit a mark of 5.40 meters (17-8.75). That leap moved the sophomore from seventh into a tie for fifth in the program record book. Wood also cleared 1.57 meters (5-1.75) in the high jump.

On the men's side, three different Orediggers produced NCAA provisional performances. Leading the way again was true freshman Hunter Potrykus in the pole vault. After clearing 4.94 meters in the first collegiate event of his career, Potrykus soared over 4.97 meters (16-3.50) on Friday. That moved him up to eighth in the nation and third in Mines' record book. Grant Redmond followed suit in the high jump. After hitting a NCAA mark last week, he improved his season best to 2.07 meters (6-9.50) which tied him for eighth in the country. Arvid Veidmark IV rounded it all out in the shot put thanks to a heave of 16.59 meters (54-5.25). As Mines' standing record holder in the event, it was his first provisional throw of the season and moved the junior into 19th place on the national list.

Day one of the Front Range #2 event also featured competitors from MSU Denver and NCAA Division I Colorado. Capacity was limited, competitors were required to turn in a negative COVID-19 test the week of the event, and anyone not actively competing was required to wear a mask. No spectators were allowed, but the event was streamed live on the RMAC Network. A full listing of the day-one results are linked above and at www.minesathletics.com.

The Orediggers continue their Front Range #2 meet on Saturday with the running events starting at 1 p.m. Like Friday, no spectators are allowed, but live results and video are available for free at www.minesathletics.com.
