Mines Opens NCAA Championships with Six Podium Appearances

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Track & Field teams combined for six podium appearances on Friday as the Orediggers opened the 2021 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships at the CrossPlex
 
Grant Redmond started the day and Mines' entire national's appearance by making history in the high jump. The sophomore overcame a sprained ankle in warmups to clear 2.06 meters (6-9.0) and take eighth place. He claimed a spot on the podium, First-Team All-America status and one team point for the Oredigger men. He became the first-ever in program history to score in the high jump at the national meet for Mines' men.
 
Luke Julian and Vincent Workman provided the next Oredigger action of the day nearly three hours later in the preliminary round of the men's mile. Both clocked lifetime bests in heat two of the event and punched their tickets into Saturday's final set to run at 1 p.m. (MT). Julian entered the day ranked #1 in the nation and ran 4:06.88 which moved him to #4 all-time at Mines. Workman paced out at 4:08.34 to rank #7 all-time for the Orediggers.
 
Less than an hour after Julian and Workman advanced in the mile, four more Orediggers proceeded to rewrite the program record book in the men's 5,000-meter run. Loic Somparin, Dylan Ko, Kyle Moran and Dillon Powell each claimed All-America awards as Scomparin finished third in the nation, Ko placed fourth, Moran stepped to the podium in eighth and Powell checked in at 11th. Scomparin's time of 13:49.09 shattered the previous Oredigger record by nearly 20 seconds with Ko and Moran moving up to #2 and #3 all-time at Mines. Powell's 14:11.36 slotted the redshirt freshman into the new seventh spot in the record book. John O'Malley also finished 16th in the nation in a time of 14:50.53.
 
The quartet of Luc Hagen, Joey Maguire, Ben Abueg and Workman rounded out day one for Mines' men by bringing in four more Second-Team All-America honors in the distance-medley relay. Their time of 10:03.08 them ninth in all the land. The race also marked NCAA Championships debuts for Maguire and Abueg.
 
Hannah Miller led off the women's side by taking Second-Team All-America distinction in the pole vault. Miller cleared 3.95 meters (12-11.5) to finish ninth in the nation in her debut on the national stage. Aryelle Wright followed Miller's lead and also claimed Second-Team All-America honors in a record-setting 800-meter run performance. Wright clocked in 2:12.30 to move up to #1 all-time in program history and finish 11th in the nation.
 
Mines' next event truly stole the show in the evening portion of the meet. Zoe Baker and Molly Maksin teamed up in the 5,000-meter run for a pair of podium appearances and two First-Team All-America awards. Baker's 16:25.64 time not only put her third in the nation, but also shattered the previous Oredigger record by more than 30 seconds. Maksin raced onto the podium in 16:56.86, taking eighth in the nation and putting herself #3 all-time at Mines. The duo also scored the first points for the Oredigger women with a total of seven.
 
Heather Keniry, Randi Higashi, Aryelle Wright and Maddie Geesen wrapped up the day in the women's distance-medley relay. The quartet brought home Second-Team All-America status and finished 10th in the nation with a time of 12:12.64. Keniry, Higashi, Wright and Geesen brought Mines' day-one total to 17 All-America awards.
 
As a team, Mines' men finished the day ranked sixth thanks to 13 points as a team. The Oredigger women sit 19th with seven team points.
