BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Track & Field teams closed out a historic trip to the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday with the men's highest finish in program history.
Â
The Oredigger men scored 26 points to place sixth in the nation in the team standings. Their previous top finish was ninth in all of NCAA Division II. Mines' women grabbed eight points as a team and finished 23rd overall. In total, the Oredigger men and women combined for 24 all-America awards including 10 trips to the podium. Seven of Mines' top-12 finishes came on the final day with four of those times entering First-Team All-America status. Capping it off was five different program records including the men's and women's 3K marks on Saturday.
Â
Mines opened the final day with
Hunter Potrykus in the men's pole vault before
Luke Julian and
Vincent Workman took the track in the finals of the men's mile. Workman leapt out of the gate and paced the field for nearly half the race before Julian rolled forward to finish fourth in the nation and claim First-Team All-America. Julian's time of 4:05.85 marked a second straight lifetime best for the South Dakota native. It also solidified his spot at #3 in the Oredigger record book. Workman crossed the finish line in ninth place and grabbed his second all-America honor of the weekend after the mile prelims and distance medley relay on Friday.
Â
Julian returned to the track less than an hour later for the 3,000-meter run along with fellow Orediggers
Kyle Moran,
Dylan Ko,
Loic Scomparin and
Dillon Powell. Moran emerged as the early leader climbing from eighth through 400 meters up to first through 600 meters. He held that position for the next five laps. Then, Scomparin began to make his move. Over the final six laps and 1,200 meters, the redshirt freshman improved one slot per lap. At the finish line, Scomparin found himself in third place with a program-record time of 8:01.51, giving him First-Team All-America for the second time in two days and moving him to #1 in the Oredigger record book. Ko joined his teammate on the podium, taking seventh place in 8:05.26 and moving up to #3 all-time at Mines. Powell and Moran finished 11th and 12th for Second-Team All-America honors while Julian crossed in 14th. Powell's 8:12.77 also etched his name in the program's top-10.
