COLORADO SPRINGS - After falling 7-0 to UCCS in the opener of their RMAC pod series, Colorado School of Mines was poised to bounce back with a game two win over New Mexico Highlands. That is, until Mother Nature intervened.
A snow squall in the bottom of the ninth of Mines' game with NMHU halted play for the day, with the Orediggers leading 8-6 but NMHU having the bases loaded with two outs. The teams and umpires agreed to suspend the game until 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning, when Mines will try for a final out to gain victory; the two teams will then play their regularly-scheduled game to follow.
GAME 1 - UCCS 7, Mines 0 [Box Score]
UCCS shut down Mines' bats in the pod opener and scored late to pull away in a 7-0 scoreline.
The Orediggers received a solid start by
Drew Hill allowing three runs with seven strikeouts over six innings, but the Mountain Lions broke through with 14 total hits while their starter Daniel Silva turned in an eight-strikeout complete-game shutout.
UCCS scored an early run on Anderson's double in the first, then tacked on two more in the fourth when Matt Berg doubled in one run and later scored thanks to a throwing error on a strike 'em out, throw 'em out attempt.
Hill departed after the sixth and UCCS extended their lead with Jaeden Hegmann's RBI single in the seventh and a three-run eighth that included Matt McDermott's squeeze bunt and RBI from Evan Richards and Walker Rumsey.
GAME 2 - Mines 8, New Mexico Highlands 6 (Suspended) [Game Stats]
A gusty snow squall halted play to a thriller as Colorado School of Mines leads New Mexico Highlands 8-6 in the ninth inning of a suspended game.
Both starters gave their teams strong outings with Schoneman going eight and two-thirds with five strikeouts, and Jadrian Martinez departing in the seventh after striking out three and allowing two earned. Mines' bats produced 16 hits, including a 3-for-5 game by
Danny McDermott and 3-for-4 pace by
Caden Bonds.
With Mines playing as the away team, McDermott got things going in the top of the first when he singled in
Alex Bumpus, but NMHU quickly took the lead when Joe Kuhn led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run before Fabian Ferreira singled in Gavin Gifford to lead 2-1.
Mines' bats heated up as
I-Ly Hsue went yard to tie it 2-2 in the third, and Luke Folson drove one inside the leftfield foul pole to lead off the fourth with a 3-2 advantage.
The Orediggers broke it open in the seventh with a five-run frame. McDermott reached with a one-out single causing NMHU to pull Martinez, and Mines quickly figured out reliever J.T. Mossberg, scoring all five runs off him with two outs. Bonds singled in McDermott to start the rally, and two batters later,
Keene Tanaka drew a bases-loaded walk before Bumpus singled in two more runs. Tanaka then scored on an error to make it 8-2.
As the snow squall blew into Colorado Springs in the ninth, NMHU put four across in the ninth including Ashton Roy's homer to start the rally. Ferreira and Jared Brown singled in runs to cut it to 8-6 with two outs, and the Cowboys loaded the bases as
Blake Ripp hit the only batter he faced just before the game was halted.
