GAME 1 - Mines 13, Fort Lewis 1 (5 inn.)
Megan Dickson drove in five runs, including a grand slam, to lead a 13-1 run-rule drubbing over Fort Lewis in the series opener.
Clara Larson also homered to produce three RBI and
Kayleigh Krueger went 3-for-3 as Mines' bats supported a four-hit, one-run effort by
Sydney Marchando (4-4).Â
Kruger doubled in Mines' first run in the top of the first, but Fort Lewis tied it up on Taylor Beaman's double in the second. Things went sideways for the Skyhawks in the third as Mines started a five-run rally on Larson's sac fly to take the lead 2-1; RBI singles by Krueger and Dickson combined with
Sidney Wilson's two-run base hit to make it 6-1.
Comfortably ahead, Mines continued to pour it on in the fourth as
Sam Wade brought in Larson before Dickson homered to left with the bases loaded - her third homer of the season - to lead 11-1. Larson added her sixth home run of the season in the top of the fifth to make it 13-1.
FLC used three pitchers with starter Brianna Leavell (2-4) taking the loss.
GAME 2 - Mines 4, Fort Lewis 3
A Fort Lewis error in the top of the seventh allowed Colorado School of Mines to score the decisive run and win 4-3 after a back-and-forth second game.
Mines ran out to a 3-0 lead in the second before the Skyhawks tied it up with runs in the fourth and fifth, but it was the baserunning of
Renata Boyd that made the difference in the seventh as
Lauren Decker earned the pitching decision in relief of
Kylie Redding.
After the game one slugfest, the two teams combined for just seven hits as all of Mines' runs came off Skyhawk miscues. In the second,
Stefanie Brunello was hit by a pitch with the bases to loaded to bring
Kayleigh Krueger across, and a wild pitch let
Kailey Robb score before an error on the shortstop let
Sidney Wilson reach and
Aubree Karraker plate to lead 3-0.
FLC put two across in the fourth as Leavell tripled and Shelby Hotchkiss' sacrifice fly made it 3-2; Jadyn Gilley homered in the bottom of the fifth to tie it 3-3. Mines turned a 1-6-3 double play to get out of the sixth, and in the top of the seventh, Boyd walked, stole second, and then wheeled around to score after Karraker's bunt attempt was mishandled by the pitcher. Decker then worked a clean 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to seal the win.
Redding departed in the fifth allowing three runs; Decker (1-1) was nearly flawless in relief with 2.2 innings of no-hit softball. Mandy Lorenson (0-5) took the loss striking out six and allowing two earned.
