GOLDEN, Colo. - In a battle of top-25 teams, #2 Colorado Mesa remained undefeated as they came back in both the second and third sets to defeat #13 Colorado School of Mines 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 26-24).
The Orediggers (8-4, 8-4 RMAC) wrap up conference play as the #5 seed and will likely take on Regis in the RMAC Tournament quarterfinals; final seedings are pending the outcome of Wednesday's final RMAC match between MSU Denver and UCCS. All three rounds of the tournament will be held at Colorado Mesa (14-0, 11-0 RMAC) as they clinched the regular-season title with Monday's win.
Mines bounced back from a tough first set to hit .204 for the match led by 11 kills apiece from
Taylor Hicken and
Julia Eiken.
Elle Duis had 11 digs and
Drew Stokes had 32 assists with seven digs. Maddi Foutz and Savannah Spitzer led CMU with 13 kills each as Spitzer hit .571; the Mavs hit .305 for the match.
Tied 10-10 in the first set, Mesa used a 5-0 run to take control and never looked back as the Orediggers were held to .000 hitting. That quickly changed at the start of the second, with Mines taking a mid-set lead at 11-10 as Stokes had a pair of second-touch kills and
Amanda Donais added three in the opening 11 points. the lead stayed at two until 20-18, when CMU hit another 5-0 run; that put them ahead 23-20, and despite Mines pulling closer on two straight Maverick errors at 24-23, CMU put it away with a Spitzer kill.
The third set was back-and-forth through the first half, but Mines hit its stride with a 6-2 stretch to get the set to 21-16; Donais, Eiken, and Hicken had kills in that run, and another kill by Hicken followed by her block with Donais made it 24-20 and gave the Orediggers their first set point of the match.
Mesa responded with one final incredible run, however, reeling off six straight points to win the match; with both teams out of timeouts, Mines had three straight errors before Spitzer and Holly Schmidt found kills to win 26-24.
