GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Track & Field teams hosted their first home meet in two years at Stermole Track and Crouch Field as the 2021 Kit Mayer Classic started and finished on Sunday with multiple record-setting performances at the Clear Creek Athletic Complex.
Â
Mines' nationally-ranked men and women finished the day boasting two program records, two facility records and 13 new NCAA-qualifying performances that included to automatic qualifiers.
Arvid Veidmark IV and the women's 4x400-meter relay were responsible for the program records. Veidmark IV tossed the shot put 17.52 meters (57-5.75) to improve his own top mark in the record book, while the women's relay of
Amena Nelson,
Aryelle Wright,
Randi Higashi and
Layla Moriarty did the same with a time of 3:50.72. Veidmark IV's shot put was also a NCAA provisional mark putting him 14th in the nation.
Â
Zoe Baker and
Dylan Ko toppled the facility records in the women's 10,000-meter run and the men's 5,000-meter run. Baker ran the 10K at a pace of 36:05.88 and easily went under the previous time of 37:00.36. Ko raced the 5K and finished in a time 14:15.72. The former record was 14:29.95. Baker's performance was a NCAA provisional time and put her sixth in the nation, while Ko's time automatically qualified him for the NCAA Championships and ranks #1 in DII this season.
Â
However, program and facility records were not the only highlights of the day. Veidmark IV also put up a NCAA provisional toss of 57.70 meters (189-4.0) in the hammer throw to rank 30th in the nation and fifth in program history.
Krista Carlo did the same on the women's side in the hammer on a mark of 53.21 meters (174-7.0). That moved her to 29th in the nation and third in the Mines record book.
Kathleen Tomon added to the throwing swagger by posting a NCAA provisional heave of 13.92 meters (45-8.0) in the shot put. Tomon now ranks 24th in the nation and third in the Orediggers' outdoor record book.
Â
From the throwing ring to the runway, Mines' NCAA qualifiers came from all over the complex thanks to
Sophia Collins' leap of 5.90 meters (19-4.25) in the long jump. She moved herself to 16th in the nation and improved her third-place mark in the program record book.
Hunter Potrykus and Ben Tombly also impressed on the runway, but theirs was the pole vault approach. Potrykus cleared a NCAA provisional height of 5.12 meters (16-9.5) and Twombly soared over a provisional bar of 4.82 meters (15-9.75). Potrykus' performance improved his spot a third place in the Mines record book and Twombly shifted into a tie for sixth. Additionally, Potrykus slotted himself eighth in the nation and Twombly checked in at 30th.
Â
Back on the track,
Molly Maksin joined Baker in the 10K and ran a NCAA provisional pace of 37:14.94. With Baker taking over third place in the Oredigger record book, Maksin claimed sixth and positioned herself 15th in all of DII in 2021.
Dillon Powell,
Loic Scomparin and
Kyle Moran rounded out the NCAA-qualifying performances by running with Ko in the men's 5K. Powell, like Ko, automatically qualified for the national meet thanks to a time of 14:23.78 which ranks fifth after conversion for altitude. Scomparin finished in 14:31.81 and Moran ran 14:33.07 to take over 11th and 13th in the nation, respectively.
