GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines kept its hot play going, winning two run-rule games to open its series with Adams State on Friday.
The Orediggers (16-10, 15-7 RMAC) extended their winning streak to six games having won 12 of their last 14, walking off with a 10-1 win in six innings in game one before cruising 9-0 in five later in the afternoon.
Clara Larson had a monster day at the plate, going a combined 6-for-7 with three doubles and a triple as she became the fourth player in program history to surpass 250 career hits. Mines pitching had a great day as well as Syndey Marchando worked a two-hit, five-strikeout first game and
Kylie Redding blanked the Grizzlies (6-18, 6-16 RMAC) in game two.
GAME 1 - MINES 10, ADAMS STATE 1 (6 inn.)
Big fifth and sixth innings helped Mines blow open the game and win the series opener 10-1.
Clara Larson went 3-for-4 with three RBI and
Renata Boyd,
Kylie Redding, and
Kayleigh Krueger each had two-hit outings to lead the Orediggers, who produced 13 hits in six at-bats.
Sydney Marchando (6-4) allowed only two hits for her second straight start, striking out five and walking none in an efficient 79-pitch outing. Jade Garbiso (2-5) took the loss in five innings with Jasmine Garbiso throwing the sixth. Both of ASU's hits were triples by Kyrah Achibald.
Larson got Mines going with a single to score Boyd in the first, and Krueger's sacrifice fly made it 2-0 later in the inning;
Megan Dickson scored on an error in the second to extend the lead to 3-0, but the Grizzlies got on the board when Garbiso helped herself with an RBI groundout in the fourth to make it a 3-1 game.
Mines busted the game open with a three-run fifth as Larson and Krueger drove in runs on singles before
Kailey Robb smashed a pinch-hit RBI double to the fence to make it 6-1; in the sixth, Larson doubled in
Lauren Decker before Redding singled her in, and
Sam Wade's two-run single plated two more runs to end the game at 10-1.
GAME 2 - MINES 9, ADAMS STATE 0 (5 inn.)
Kylie Redding threw a five-inning shutout and Mines again pounded the Grizzlies at the plate to win the second game of the day 9-0 in five innings.
The Orediggers had 11 hits in just four trips to the plate led again by Larson, who was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a triple, scoring every time she reached base.
Megan Dickson drove in two runs and Redding helped herself with a 2-for-2 game.
Mines batted around in a six-run first to take control of the game. Larson put the Orediggers ahead when she tripled to the fence in left and then scored on an error, and Dickson drove in
Kayleigh Krueger and Redding three batters later to make it 4-0.
Sidney Wilson continued the rally with a single to plate Dickson, and
Lauren Decker reached on an error to allow Wilson and
Aubree Karraker to plate for a 6-0 lead.
Larson doubled off the second-base bag to score
Renata Boyd in the second before Redding's sac fly made it 8-0, and Kruger tacked on an RBI groundout to score Larson in the fourth.
The Mines defense helped Redding produce the zero including two great plays in the first, with a foul-out catch at the fence by
Stefanie Brunello turned into a double play with a throw to second, and then
Emilee Sloan's dart from rightfield to get Tyler Hays at third base. Wilson and Larson also added a 4-6 double play on a popout later in the game.
Redding (4-2) struck out two and scattered four hits in the shutout. Taylor Sandoval (1-6) took the loss in 3-1 innings of work allowing all nine runs, with Kaitlyn Jackson getting the last two outs in the fourth.
