Mines' Season Ends In RMAC Semifinal PKs

COLORADO SPRINGS - CSU Pueblo advanced to the RMAC Tournament final on penalty kicks after a scoreless draw with #25 Colorado School of Mines in Friday's semifinal.

There was no lack of offense as the two sides combined for 32 shots, but Nicole Genis made 12 saves and Sierra Roth stopped nine as the two goalkeepers stole the show before the Thunderwolves (6-2-2) advanced 4-2 in the shootout.

The Orediggers (7-0-3) finish the spring 2021 season unbeaten as the game officially ended in a tie. CSU Pueblo advances to Sunday's final to face Westminster, who upset #8 UCCS 2-1 in the early game.

Mines controlled the first half, peppering Genis with shots including two good early looks by Emma Peterson as the Orediggers led 9-3 on chances in the period. Things turned around in the second half for CSUP; after looking content to play the counter in the first, the Pack improved their possession and tested Roth with five shots on goal in the half. Neither team found the net, however, as Genis ended regulation with nine stops and Roth seven.

The first overtime started with a pair of Pack shots saved by Roth, but Colleen Tyrrell got off two rapid-fire shots in the closing seconds that nearly resulted in a goal as Genis saved the first and the second was cleared by a defender. Mines was the more dangerous side in the second extra period, with Chaney Brugman and Eliot Edwards producing terrific scoring opportunities and Ava Harman's shout for a penalty in the 107th minute denied after she was tripped up on a breakaway in the box.

In penalty kicks, CSU Pueblo went first and made their opening attempt while Genis saved Tyrrell's shot; both Shelby Ransom and Edwards made their tries in the second round with Cortney Cowles and Karolina Sidebaeck missing in the third. Litzy Serna and Brugman converted in the fourth round to make it 3-2 CSU Pueblo, and that left it to Porsche Nieto, who made her shot to the bottom left in the fifth round to advance 4-2.

NOTABLES
- Mines has produced seven straight shutouts and 728:23 consecutive scoreless minutes in the RMAC Tournament dating back to the 2018 quarterfinals.
- Roth's nine saves were a career high and the most by a Mines goalkeeper in the RMAC semifinals or final. Only Briana Schulze has more in any postseason match, making 10 stops in the 2007 RMAC quarterfinals and 11 stops in the 2010 NCAA First Round.
- Roth ends her first season as starter having conceded only two goals, both from the penalty spot. Her 0.23 GAA is a Mines single-season record.
- Mines led 19-13 on shots and 5-3 on corners while CSU Pueblo held a 51-49 possession edge.
- Mines' team 0.30 goals-against average is second all-time in a season behind the 2014 team's 0.29 rate.
- It was only the third time in program history that Mines went to PKs in the RMAC Tournament, and first since the 2014 final. The Orediggers advanced in their previous two shootouts.
- The two teams also drew in the regular season, a 1-1 scoreline at Stermole Stadium.
- Sunday's match will be the first RMAC Tournament final to feature neither Mines or UCCS since 2010.
