GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Track & Field teams along with nine other programs added to the list of national qualifiers on Saturday at the Oredigger-hosted Pre-Conference Invite at Stermole Track and Crouch Field.
Â
The last event of the jam-packed day was the biggest as seven different runners automatically qualified for the 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 10,000-meter run. Three Orediggers were on that list including
Kyle Moran,
Dylan Ko and
Dillon Powell as Moran ran 30:04.39, Ko paced at 30:06.03, and Powell finished in 30:09.88. Additionally, Marcelo Laguera of CSU Pueblo won the race and broke the Stermole Track record with a time of 29:59.24. Rounding out the grueling race were
Bo Raadam,
Chris Cathcart,
Jonathan Woolf,
Max Sevcik,
Duncan Fuehne and
Andrew Kaye all coming across the line in less than 32 minutes for the Orediggers.
Â
Mines flexed its defensive muscle earlier in the day as well as
Jake Mitchem ran his first 3,000-meter steeplechase in nearly two years. Mitchem finished in 9:08.77 to take down the Stermole Track record and put his name on the national qualifying list. His raw time without conversion for altitude put the steeplechaser inside the nation's top 20.
Luke Julian joined the party just a bit later by racing the 1,500 meters in 3:50.02 which should put him inside the top 10 in DII this season.
Â
Additional impressive performances on the track came on the legs of
Everett Delate,
Danny Fuhr and
Layla Moriarty. Delate sprinted through the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.43 which ties the true freshman for fourth all-time at Mines. It also provisionally qualified Delate for the national meet. Fuhr did his work in the 400-meter hurdles and posted a time of 53.47 to move up to fifth all-time in the Oredigger record book. Moriarty rounded out the stellar racing in the 400-meter dash by running 57.50 which improved her standing at fourth in Mines' history.
Â
Greatness was not limited to the track.
Arvid Veidmark IV broke his own program record in the shot put for a fifth straight week and increased his national standing thanks to a toss of 17.62 meters (57-9.75).
Kathleen Tomon proved outstanding on the women's side in the shot put with a NCAA provisional heave of 14.05 meters (46-1.25).
Grant Redmond carried his teammates' energy into the high jump where he cleared 2.12 meters (6-11.5) which puts him second all-time at Mines and inside the top 10 in the nation. Capping it off was a series of impressive performances in the women's pole vault where
Gabbi Varela,
Ava Kowalski and
Lauren Kelly proved and increased the depth of one the best vaulting groups in all of DII.
