OREDIGGERS CLOSE REGULAR SEASON ON THE ROAD
After not playing since April 11, Colorado School of Mines returns to finish the regular season with six road games, visiting Black Hills State for a four-game series Saturday and Sunday before making up two games with Regis on Monday in Denver. The Orediggers (19-13, 18-10 RMAC) are battling to stay in RMAC Tournament contention as the season wraps up.
FAN POLICY INFORMATION
Black Hills State will allow fans for this weekend's series, but Regis does not allow spectators. All games are streamed live on the RMAC Network.
IN THE HUNT
Heading into the weekend, the Orediggers are fourth in the RMAC at 18-10 (.643) a spot ahead of Regis (11-9, .550) with both Fort Lewis and CSU Pueblo at .500 looking for the last spot. BHSU is 3-30 (.091). Colorado Mesa (30-2) looks to wrap up the regular-season championship this weekend that would mean they would host the RMAC Tournament. Some wins this weekend would likely be enough to secure the Orediggers' spot in the six-team RMAC Tournament field, but teams have through May 8 to play regular-season contests, so Mines will likely have to wait until next weekend to find out their postseason spot.
WHEN WE LAST PLAYED…
Mines split a hard-fought series with Colorado Christian back on April 10-11, winning 7-6 and 4-3 in a pair of walkoffs with CCU winning 9-0 and 12-8.
Kayleigh Krueger's walkoff double in game one got the Orediggers their first victory as part of the freshman's four-RBI game that also included a home run. In game three,
Stefanie Brunello's walkoff home run in the bottom of the seventh gave Mines its other win.
Renata Boyd had a breakout series hitting .615 while Brunello slugged 1.000 for the weekend.
Sadriena Rodriguez had both wins in the circle, both in relief.
LARSON ADDS TO RECORD COLLECTION
Senior shortstop
Clara Larson continued to add to her collection of Mines career records in the CCU series, becoming the Orediggers' all-time leader in doubles with 65. She previously had set Mines marks in home runs (47) and RBI (218); she is also one of four Orediggers with 250+ career hits as she stands at 259, with the program record at 277. Her 14 triples are also one short of the record, and she is also approaching the career runs record of 192 with her 181 trips across the plate.
LEADING THE WAY
Mines has been led at the plate by a number of veterans, including a breakout senior season by
Kylie Redding, who is hitting a team-leading .421 out of the cleanup spot with 31 RBI.
Clara Larson continues to produce big numbers slashing .411/.482/.832 and leads Mines with 36 RBI and eight home runs, while
Renata Boyd has been outstanding hitting .404 and scoring 25 runs.
Stefanie Brunello also has an OPS in four digits at 1.093 driving in 21 runs with 12 doubles and a team-best 17 walks out of the leadoff spot. In the circle,
Sadriena Rodriguez has emerged to lead the staff in ERA (2.30) with a 4-0 record, while
Sydney Marchando continues to be a leader going 7-4 with a 3.98 ERA and 58 strikeouts.
SCOUTING BLACK HILLS STATE
The Yellow Jackets are trying to end their season on a high note as they enter 3-30 overall, all conference games. Bell Luebken has been a bright spot, slugging .694 with a 1.190 OPS hitting six home runs; Shayla Tuschen leads the team with 17 RBI. Mines leads their all-time series 22-5; they last played in 2019 when Mines won two out of three playing in Denver.
SCOUTING REGIS
After enduring a COVID-19-related pause earlier in the season, Regis (14-10, 11-9 RMAC) has to run the gauntlet with 12 games in eight days as they play Fort Lewis this weekend, Mines Monday, CSU Pueblo Wednesday, and Chadron State for four games next weekend. Like Mines, the Rangers are battling for a playoff spot currently in the fifth place with both FLC and CSUP on their tail. The Rangers slug an impressive .580 as a team led by Jade Loe, who is slugging .959 with eight home runs and 31 RBI; three other everyday players in Jessi Case, Katherine Raper, and Ashlynn Balliet slug .730 or better. Taylor Armitage (8-2) leads the pitching staff with a 3.43 ERA.
Mines and Regis were originally supposed to play on April 17-18; they will make up just two of those four games. RU leads the all-time series 102-37 dating back to 1990, but Mines won three of four the last time they met in 2019.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Chadron State series that was scheduled for April 25-26 will not be made up. The RMAC Tournament will begin Thursday, May 13 at the top overall seed.
