PUEBLO, Colo. -
Zoe Baker and
Molly Maksin's 1-2 finish in the 10,000m run highlighted Colorado School of Mines' opening day at the 2021 RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at CSU Pueblo.
Connor McLean snapped the Mines record in the men's long jump with his third-place performance,
Jonathan Woolf earned silver in the 10K, and
Krista Carlo was third in the women's hammer to round out Mines' podium performances on Friday.
With three events scored, the Mines men are in second with 23 points as UCCS leads with 26. The women top the board at 29 points to lead UCCS by nine.
10,000m RUN
The Orediggers' 1-2 in the women's 10K highlighted the morning on the track as Baker finished off the RMAC long-distance double after capturing the conference cross country title in the fall. Already likely secure in her NCAA qualification, Baker cruised in a time of 36:55.33, working to push Maksin to a five-second PR of 37:09.14 to improve her NCAA provisional time.
Melina Endsley finished eighth in 39:16.79 to grab the final team point.
In the men's race, Woolf won the silver in a time of 31:19.75, with
Duncan Fuehne placing fifth in 31:53.97 and
Andrew Kaye 11th in 32:25.07.
HAMMER THROW
Krista Carlo got the field events started with a bronze medal in the women's hammer, throwing 53.72m (176-3) on her fourth attempt for third. That marks a new PR for her by eight inches.
Arvid Veidmark IV finished fourth in the men's event with a best throw of 54.31m (178-2).
LONG JUMP
McLean earned a bronze medal in the men's long jump, hitting a best of 7.53m (24-8.5) on his first attempt to take third. That bested Ian Storz' mark of 7.46m that had stood since 2008; McLean also leapt up the NCAA performance list as a result with the nation's 10th-best mark.
Sophia Collins scored four team points thanks to a fifth-place finish in the women's long jump. Collins' best attempt of 5.84m (19-2) came on her fourth jump.
DECATHLON
Hayden Sather is second through five events in the decathlon, scoring 3,757 points to trail UCCS' Thorben Hast by 113 points. Sather won the 100m dash in 10.91, then cleared 6.80m in the long jump, hit 12.340m in the shot, and made the 1.76m bar in the high jump. He scored big points to finish the day with a 48.51 time in the 400m, winning the event with a new personal best and the #10 all-time performance in the Mines record book.
TRACK PRELIMS
Friday on the track was largely sprint and middle-distance prelims, and multiple Orediggers made their way through to Sunday finals. In the 1,500m,
Luke Julian ran a 3:48.98 in the second heat, and
Heather Keniry made the women's final field with a 4:41.15 time. Both
Layla Moriarty (56.57) and
Amena Nelson (57.30) qualified for the women's 400m final; Moriarty's time was a PR and the #3 all-time Mines performance, while Nelson also PR'd with the new #4 performance.
Danny Fuhr qualified for the men's 400m hurdles final in 54.94.
NEXT UP
Saturday's action begins at 9 a.m. with the resumption of the decathlon. In the field, finals will be held for the women's triple jump, men's and women's discus, and women's pole vault, while on the track the steeplechase will be decided along with prelims in the 100/110m hurdles, 200m, and 800m.
