Day One Results

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. –
The Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Track & Field teams put together a series of strong performances on Friday afternoon to start the two-day Maverick Multi & Open hosted by Colorado Mesa.

In the much anticipated return of Orediggers in the decathlon, Connor McLean and Hayden Sather did not disappoint as the duo ended the day first and second, respectively, after five events. McLean's 3,822 points were fueled by first-place finishes in the 100-meter dash, long jump and high jump. Sather put up 3,687 points thanks to a blazing performance of 48.85 in the 400-meter dash which ranks eighth all-time at Mines. The time also marked a facility record at the newly christened CMU Track & Field complex, as did McLean's long jump of 7.17 meters. Both McLean's and Sather's strongest events are yet to come on Saturday including the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run.

Other top performances for Mines included Hannah Miller in the pole vault. For a fourth consecutive week, she broke the program record. This time, Miller's height was another automatic qualifying mark of 4.11 meters (13-5.75) which should move her into sole possession of second place in the nation. Like Sather's 400-meter dash, Miller's pole vault performance also put her in the facility record book. Also competing in the pole vault for Mines were Hunter Potrykus, Ben Twombly, Avery Herbold, Gabbi Varela, Ava Kowalski and Lauren Kelly.

Rounding out the first day of action were Arvid Veidmark IV, Krista Carlo and Kathleen Tomon all competing in the discus. Veidmark's toss of 48.61 meters (159-5.0) improved his standing at third all-time in Mines' history and helped him finish second in a field packed with RMAC competition. Carlo also finished second in the discus and moved up to fourth all-time for the Orediggers thanks to a mark of 42.41 meters (139-1.0). Tomon claimed fourth place thanks to another toss over 40 meters of distance.

Mines continues its weekend on Saturday with more field events at the Colorado Mesa meet while track athletes head to Boulder for the CU Invitational. Live stats of both locations will be linked at www.minesathletics.com.
