GOLDEN, Colo. –
Kathleen Tomon and Connor McLean both produced record-breaking performances on Friday evening for the Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Track & Field teams at the Mines Friday Last Chance.

Tomon competed in the very first event of the evening and absolutely dazzled in the shot put with a top mark of 14.92 meters (48-11.5). That mark shattered the previous program record of 14.75 meters (48-4.75) set by Sarah Thaler in 1987. It also improved her NCAA provisional qualifying ranking. All four of Tomon's qualifying throws were over the 14.50-meter mark and she currently ranks 12th in the nation. It all came on the same day that the Utah native walked across the stage at Mines' commencement and received her bachelor's degree in chemical engineering.

McLean closed the evening with multiple records in the pole vault as he cleared 5.35 meters (17-6.5). Not only did he break his own program record of 5.30 meters (17-4.5), he also broke the Stermole Track record of 5.32 meters (17-5.5) set by Cale Simmons of NCAA Division I Air Force in 2016. The Oredigger graduate student now ranks #1 in the nation in the pole vault. He's automatically qualified for nationals in the pole vault and the decathlon with a provisional mark in the long jump. McLean ranks fourth in the nation in the decathlon and 12th in the long jump while holding three program records.

Friday also served as an exclamation point and swan song for a women's senior class the rewrote the program record book. Layla Moriarty doubled up in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash. She ran the 400 meters in 57.77 seconds while pacing the 200 meters in 26.01 which puts her fifth in Mines' record book. Allee Beach competed in her last race and nearly broke the program record in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal record of 1:02.97 to put herself second all-time at Mines. Sophia Collins entered the long jump and closed her career as the Orediggers' #1-ranked indoor long jumper and #3-ranked outdoor long jumper. Krista Carlo joined Tomon in the shot put and tossed the hammer as well. Carlo finishes her career at Mines listed four times in the outdoor record book including third in the hammer throw, fourth in the discus, seventh in the javelin and eighth in the shot put.

Additional notable performances included Everett Delate's time of 14.35 in the 110-meter hurdles which ranks the true freshman fourth in program history and 25th in the nation. Chris Cathcart ran a NCAA provisional time in the 10,000-meter run at 31:33.38. Hunter Protrykus also hit the 5.00-meter mark in the pole vault for the second time in his career.

Mines now looks to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships slated May 27-29 in Allendale, Mich. Official national qualifiers will be announced in the coming weeks at www.minesathletics.com.
