Mines Mini Meet Results | West Coast Distance Carnival Results

GOLDEN, Colo.
- The Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Track & Field teams divided and conquered on Saturday with a group of Orediggers at the West Coast Distance Carnival while hosting the Mines Mini-Meet.

The distance runners stole the show in Livermore, Calif., as they added two more automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Luke Julian ran the 5,000 meters in 13:52.17 and Loic Scomparin finished just behind in 13:52.53. Both times punched Julian's and Scomparin's tickets to the national meet while ranking third and fourth in program history. Julian and Scomparin also put themselves eighth and ninth in the nation. Kyle Moran and Max Sevcik also rank the 5K and finished in 14:09.56 and 14:38.24, respectively. Moran's time put him inside Mines' all-time top 10 as well.

Other action at the West Coast Distance Carnival included Aryelle Wright breaking her own program record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.61. Zoe Baker, Heather Keniry, Maddie Geesen, Molly Maksin and Morgan Molesworth raced the 5,000 meters as well, and Baker walked away with the third-best time in program history and a top-30 time in all the nation this season at 16:55.18. Keniry also put herself on the national list and wrote her name in Mines' record book by running 17:03.45. She now ranks fifth in program history and 32nd in all of NCAA Division II. Additionally, Maksin put her name at sixth in the Oredigger outdoor record book thanks to a time of 17:21.87. Nathan Davis rounded out Mines' trip to the West Coast by running 9:11.93 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. His time is 33rd in DII this season and seventh in Oredigger history.

Back in Golden, there was plenty of throwing action on Saturday including in the shot put, where Kathleen Tomon won the women's event with a best throw of 14.15m (46-5.25). That improved her PR by 10 centimeters and also improved her NCAA provisional status. Freshly-minted RMAC champion Arvid Veidmark IV was third in the men's shot put at 17.04m (55-11); of note, unattached competitor Nate Miller threw 19.81m to break the nine-year-old facility record by more than a meter.

Tomon also won the women's discus at 42.30m (138-9) with Krista Carlo second (39.98m/131-2), and Carlo won the hammer throw with an NCAA provisional mark of 53.52m (175-7), improving her collegiate best by 31 centimeters. In the men's discus, Connor McLean - already automatically into NCAAs in the decathlon - hit a huge career best with a 40.73m (133-7) toss, more than three meters better than his previous best.

The pole vault was plagued by gusty cross winds, starting nearly three and a half hours late as they waited for conditions to improve; Hannah Miller cleared 3.75m (12-3.5) for first in the women's competition while Ben Twombly cleared 4.70m (15-5) for third place as Mines' only men's competitor. The high jump was similarly disrupted by the wind as Lexye Wood cleared two bars, the highest at 1.63m (5-4.25) for a new PR.

Sophia Collins led two Mines competitors in the women's long jump with a best attempt of 5.66m (18-7), while Abigail Gillespie hit 5.45m (17-10.75). Garrett Halbrooks was the lone men's jumper with a best of 6.88m (22-7), which marked a 6.5-inch improvement on his collegiate best.

The Orediggers continue their final push next weekend by hosting the Mines Sunday Last Chance at Stermole Track and Crouch Field in Golden. Additional information will be available next week at www.minesathletics.com.
