GOLDEN, Colo. - It was a night of firsts for #4 Colorado School of Mines as they prevailed in a comprehensive 2-0 non-conference victory against Fort Lewis.
Quin Collins and
Zane Sokolowski netted their first collegiate goals while goalkeeper
Kenneth Symmes made his first start in an Oredigger shirt to produce the shutout.
Mines (3-1-0) outshot Fort Lewis (1-1-1) 20-5, pouring on the pressure in the second half and never letting the Skyhawks find their rhythm outside of a dangerous opening eight minutes.
The Skyhawks came out firing and nearly made it 1-0 in the eighth minute when Symmes made a sensational fingertip save of Aymaro Vargas' shot, and Brantley Bice missed a point-blank open-goal rebound. Mines answered with
Azad Iliozer's counterattacking run up the left seconds later, and he crossed to the middle of the box for Collins to finish at 8:15.
It was all Mines after that, and they produced another goal in the 20th minute.
Lucas King continued his torrid form with a long throw into the box that deflected off FLC goalkeeper Peter Byrne, and Sokolowski was there to stuff in the loose ball to lead 2-0.
Mines had a lopsided 14-2 shots advantage in the second half but never found a third goal despite forcing Byrne to make four saves in the period.
