ROAD WARRIORS OREDIGGERS HEAD TO FLORIDA
Now 2-0-2 to start the season, #25 Colorado School of Mines continues to test itself out of conference with its first-ever visit to Florida to take on Rollins (Thursday, 6 p.m. ET) and #10 Florida Tech (Saturday, noon ET) this week. The Orediggers went 1-0-1 in a trip to Texas last weekend as they have racked up nearly 5,000 miles of travel (4,896 miles, to be exact) in an eight-day span.
LIVE COVERAGE
Both of this week's matches will be streamed live on the SSC Digital Network.
LAST WEEK REWIND
Mines started their Texas trip with a 2-0 win at Midwestern State as
AK Ford and
Lauren Clingman scored second-half goals and
Sierra Roth worked a four-save shutout. At Texas Woman's, Mines settled for a 1-1 draw as
Eliot Edwards scored early and Mines outshot the Pioneers 10-7 (and 5-0 in OT) but never found a winner. Roth had four saves in that match.
IN THE POLLS
Mines appeared in the United Soccer Coaches' poll this week for the 100th time in program history, falling four spots to #25. Saturday's opponent, Florida Tech, dropped six spots to #10. Mines will be playing a top-25 opponent for the 57th time and are 24-22-11 against them, including 9-13-6 against the top 10. The Orediggers were also selected as the RMAC's preseason favorite on Aug. 18, topping the coaches' poll ahead of UCCS with seven of the 13 first-place votes.
STARTING A NEW STREAK
Texas Woman's goal against the Orediggers is their only one conceded so far this season in four matches, and it halted an impressive scoreless streak both by the defense and goalkeeper
Sierra Roth. The Orediggers' scoreless streak ended at 657:25 dating back to last season, marking the second-longest streak in program history. Roth's scoreless streak of 567:25 was the fifth-longest by a goalkeeper in program history.
ON A ROLL
With the results last weekend, Mines ran its unbeaten streak to 23 matches dating back to Oct. 20, 2019, going 17-0-6 in that span.
MINES QUICK LOOK
The Orediggers have ridden their usual lockdown defense this season, allowing only one goal in four matches (0.25 GAA) as
Sierra Roth has a 0.23 GAA and .933 save percentage with three shutouts. Offensively it's been done by committee with five different goalscorers -
Meg Zimmerman,
Reese McDermott,
AK Ford,
Eliot Edwards, and
Lauren Clingman - finding the net.
Emma Peterson leads the team with 11 shots.
SCOUTING ROLLINS
Rollins is a deceptive 1-3-0 this season, but two of those losses came to #2 Mississippi College, 2-1, and to #1 Flagler, also by a 2-1 score. The Tars (a historical nickname for British sailors) are averaging a goal per game and 16.3 shots per game while limiting opponents to 8.3 shots per game, but giving up 1.25 goals. Four different players have scored for Rollins, which is located in Winter Park, Fla. just outside Orlando. Elena Beasley has started all four matches and has a 1.36 GAA and .667 save percentage. Mines and Rollins are meeting for the second time, having previously squared off in the 2014 NCAA Final Four when the Tars advanced to the national final 1-0.
SCOUTING FLORIDA TECH
Located in Melbourne, Fla. on the Atlantic coast just south of Cape Canaveral, #10 Florida Tech is 2-0-1 this season including wins over Auburn-Montgomery (4-1), Montevallo (1-0), and a scoreless draw with #11 Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday. The Panthers have allowed only one goal in three matches while scoring five, led by Mariana Mazzocca's two tallies and Marem Ndiongue's three assists. Maria Sanchez Recuero has been outstanding in goal with a .875 save percentage and 0.31 GAA. This will be the first meeting between Mines and Florida Tech.
EVANS GETS HALL CALL
Former Mines star Anna Evans was part of the Mines Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2021 announced earlier in August. The three-time all-American and two-time Academic All-American was the 2012 RMAC Player of the Year and 2013 regional player of the year tallying 55 goals and 23 assists in her career, including 19 game-winning goals. Evans led Mines to the program's first-ever RMAC regular-season title in 2013 and won three straight RMAC Tournament crowns starting in 2011.
