GOLDEN, Colo. -
Lucas King created a pair of goals to lead #8 Colorado School of Mines to a season-opening win over Saint Martin's, 2-1, on Friday at Stermole Stadium.
All three of the game's goals came off set pieces as the Orediggers (1-0) took a 2-0 lead and then held off the Saints (0-1) late. Freshman
Gabe Rodriguez and
Tristan Semelsberger scored for Mines.
The first half struggled to open up as both teams stretched the field but failed to capitalize in the box. A late throw-in for Mines produced a much-needed goal, however, as King launched the ball into the box for Rodriguez to poke in with only eight seconds left in the half.
Another King set piece, this time a free kick from the right side, produced the game-winning goal in the 57th minute. King put the ball into the six for a slashing Semelsberger, who got behind the defense and deflected it in for the 2-0 lead. Saint Martin's would then score against the run of play in the 74th minute, drawing a corner that Jason Fairhurst put home off Jose Marquez's header in.
