DENVER, Colo. - #17 Regis overcame a late deficit to escape with a win over Colorado School of Mines, 66-64, in a back-and-forth battle on Tuesday.
The Rangers (12-1, 7-0 RMAC) remained perfect in conference play but had to overcome the Orediggers' (5-7, 3-5 RMAC) seven-point second-half lead to win late.
Brendan Sullivan led Mines with 19 points and
Kobi Betts scored 10, while
Trent Dykema was a second-half bench spark with nine points. Brian Dawson led all scorers with 22 points to go with eight rebounds for Regis, who had to overcome .403 shooting by capitalizing on 16 Oredigger turnovers.
Aaron Bokol converted a three-point play with 1:11 left in the game to take the lead and neither team scored after that as Bokol blocked
Ben Boone in the closing seconds and Regis denied Mines a chance at a final shot.
Mines led 47-40 with 11:28 left after Sullivan's and-one slash, but Regis responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead before Dykema's first three-pointer wrested it back at 50-48. It was a dogfight for the final eight minutes as the two teams traded leads and ties, but Mines went up five, 63-58, with 4:03 on a Betts jumper.
Dawson reacted with a three-pointer to cut the lead to two, then hit another basket to tie it less than a minute later. Sullivan made one of two free throws with 2:10 remaining to retake the lead 64-63, but the Orediggers would not score again as Bokol's three-point play with 1:11 to go put the Rangers on top and neither team scored after that.
