LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Under a cloudless, clear Colorado sky Thursday afternoon, the #10 Colorado School of Mines women's soccer team resumed Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at Trailblazer Stadium, lining up opposite of Colorado Christian. An early first half score coupled with two more in an eight-minute span in the second half along with another strong defensive effort propelled the Orediggers (9-1-2, 6-0-1) to a 3-0 win over the Cougars (3-9-0, 2-5-0) to give head coach
Kevin Fickes the 200th win of his 13-year career.
Mines went on the attack early, as
Reese McDermott,
Landry Corbett and
Colleen Tyrrell tested the Cougars' Alana Lopp early and often in the opening minutes. Just 12 minutes in, the Orediggers struck first, as a throw in from the far side by Landry was headed home by Tyrrell to make it a 1-0 contest.
The offensive opportunities kept coming for Mines in the first half, as several players put shots on goal but were turned away by Lopp.
Kaitlyn Manalili and
Cloey Seltzer each had two opportunities to double the advantage, including one in the final seconds of the first half, but the first 45 minutes elapsed with the Orediggers ahead by one.
The second half saw the tempo slow as the shot opportunities were not nearly as plentiful as they had been to open the game. CCU had a chance for an equalizer in the 55th minute, but
Sadie Wolf, making her second consecutive start in goal, made the save to preserve the lead.
Eight minutes later in the 63rd, Mines made it a 2-0 affair after McDermott found the net on a scramble for the ball in front of the goal following a free kick that wasn't quite cleared by the defense. Looking to put things out of reach, the Orediggers continued to fire away on offense when in the 71st minute, McDermott got loose behind the Cougars' defense and chipped a shot over a sliding block attempt by Lopp into the lower left corner for the second goal of the day to make it 3-0.
Despite several more shot opportunities in the final 19 minutes of the afternoon, none of them materialized for the Orediggers as the final minutes ticked away for a 3-0 victory to keep pace atop the RMAC standings, and give Fickes career win number 200.
