COLORADO SPRINGS – Mines women's basketball newcomer
Jessica Rios was named the RMAC Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday following a pair of dazzling performances in Texas over the weekend.
Rios earned the first RMAC award of her career after leading the #15-ranked Colorado School of Mines Women's Basketball team to a 2-0 weekend. The Orediggers started the weekend and the season with a 74-45 win against St. Edward's as Rios racked up six steals and one block on the defensive side of the ball. She also added seven rebounds, six points, and three assists in 27 minutes of action. Rios followed that with four steals, 12 points, three assists, and two rebounds on Saturday in Mines' 86-45 win against St. Mary's.
The Sacramento State transfer now ranks #1 in the RMAC in total steals and steals per game. She's also #6 in all of NCAA Division II in the same categories. Rios' offensive production has her #5 in the RMAC in three-point field goal percentage, #10 in assist-to-turnover ratio, #11 in three-pointers per game, and #13 in assists as well. She played her first two collegiate seasons at NCAA Division I Sacramento State before transferring to Mines this fall.
Rios and the Orediggers open their 2022-23 home schedule this weekend with a game against Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday at 6 p.m. inside Lockridge Arena. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. Live stats and video of both games will be offered at www.minesathletics.com.
