GOLDEN, Colo. - Fort Lewis hit two free throws with three seconds remaining to break a tie after Colorado School of Mines' furious comeback erased a 19-point deficit, handing the Skyhawks a 62-60 win.
The loss snapped the Orediggers' (13-8, 11-6 RMAC) eight-game win streak. Fort Lewis improved to 13-7 overall and 9-5 in-league.
Brendan Sullivan put Mines on his back with a game-high 22 points, and
Justin Engesser added 10 including two crucial late three-pointers.
Ben Boone had nine points with the game-tying free throws with seven seconds left.
Mines held the RMAC's #1 offensive team to 62 points as Riley Farris had 20 and Brenden Boatwright a 14-point, 13-rebound double-double. FLC was held to .365 shooting overall; Mines had a dismal first half at .208 before bouncing back to shoot .468 in the second half for a game total of .357.
Mines trailed by as much 19 points early in the second half, but slowly chipped away and eventually got the deficit under 10 with a 6-0 run to make it 54-47 FLC with 5:35 remaining. Sullivan's three pointer a half-minute later cut the deficit to six, and after a couple of Skyhawk baskets, Mines found back-to-back threes from Engesser to turn an eight-point deficit into a 60-58 game with 33 seconds to go.
Akuel Kot went to the line with 24 ticks remaining and missed the front end of a one-and-one, and that let
Ben Boone get to the other end and be fouled with seven seconds to go. Boone made both shots to tie it at 60-60, but Fort Lewis charged the other way and drew a foul to put Jacquess Hobbs at the stripe; he made both, and despite a perfectly-placed baseball pass by Engesser on the inbounds,
Adam Krasovec's contested three to win was off target.
