Orediggers Open Nationals with Four Podiums

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Track & Field teams combined to make four podium appearances on Friday while racking up eight all-America awards on opening day of the 2022 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships.
 
Dillon Powell highlighted the day as the national runner-up and a First-Team All-American in the men's 5,000-meter run. He clocked a 13:42.58 to claim the silver medal. Teammate Jake Mitchem joined Powell on the 5K podium thanks to a fifth-place finish in 13:48.19 which also brought First-Team All-America distinction. Also in the men's 5K were Dylan Ko, Kyle Moran and Duncan Fuehne. Ko and Moran earned Second-Team All-America status by virtue of their #10 and #11, respective finishes with times of 13:53.07 and 13:54.19. Fuehne took #13 in the nation thanks to a time of 14:07.82 which moved him to #7 in the program record book.
 
Other podium appearances included Hannah Miller and Zoe Baker. Miller was the first Oredigger to walk up the podium at the national meet as she finished #6 in the nation with First-Team All-America status in in the women's pole vault. The Texan cleared 4.05 meters (13-3.5) which was the second-best height of the day and she earned her ranking based on misses. Baker was the last Oredigger up the podium on day one after taking #6 in the women's 5,000-meter run which garnered her First-Team All-America honors. Her time of 16:16.02 toppled her own program record by more than three seconds. Teammate Molly Maksin joined Baker in the 5K and ran 16:49.12 to finish #11 which earned her Second-Team All-America Distinction.
 
Rounding out Mines' performances were Luke Julian and Aryelle Wright. Julian ran in the mile prelims and advanced to Saturday's final with the sixth-fastest time, clocking in at 4:06.46. Wright raced the 800-meter prelims and shattered her own program record with a time of 2:09.89. That improved her standing as the fastest Oredigger woman in the 800 meters in program history. She just missed finals by one spot as she clinched #9 in the nation and Second-Team All-America.
 
In the team standings, Mines' men are #2 with 12 points. Grand Valley State holds the lead after one day thanks to 14 points. Ashland, Azusa Pacific, Lee and Southern Indiana are all right behind the Orediggers with 10 points. The Oredigger women are tied for #14 thanks to six points from Miller and Baker. Grand Valley State also leads the women's side on the merits of 29 points. Minnesota State sits #2 with 28 points and Adams State is #3 thanks to 16 points.
 
Mines continues and closes its trip to the 2022 NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships on Saturday. Grant Redmond is the first Oredigger in action as he competes the high jump starting at 3:30 p.m. (CT). Live stats and video will be linked at www.minesathletics.com
