It should come as no surprise that Friday's weather in Stanford, Calif., will be nearly perfect for outdoor track & field. The high temperature is projected to by 67 degrees with humidity at 65 percent and a light breeze no more than 10 mph. Grand Junction looks to also provide high quality conditions for the weekend. LOOKING BACK
Mines' men and women last competed at the Spank Blasing Invite hosted by CSU Pueblo at the ThunderBowl. The Orediggers walked away with five new NCAA-qualifying performances along with numerous additions to the program record book.
Steven Goldy,
Hunter Potrykus,
Arvid Veidmark IV,
Hannah Miller and
Avery Herbold all added their names or improved their standing on the national qualifying list. Goldy ran the men's 5,000 meters in 14:30.75 and now ranks #4 in the nation. Potrykus cleared 5.20 meters (17-0.75) in the men's pole vault which puts him #3 in NCAA Division II this season and ups his standing at #3 in the program record book. Veidmark IV tossed the shot put 16.67 meters (54-8.25) and now sits #20 in the nation. Miller and Herbold teamed up in the women's pole vault and improved to #6 and #11, respectively. Miller earned her ranking with a bar of 4.00 meters (13-1.5). Herbold cleared 3.85 meters (12-7.5).
RECORD BOOK REVISIONS
Last week it was noted that the indoor season featured 46 revisions to the program record book. The outdoor season has already contributed 18 additions to that program record book with the latest coming last weekend at the Spank Blasing Open in Pueblo, Colo. In addition to the five NCAA-qualifying performances and Potrykus' improvement in the record book, six other Orediggers provided eight revisions to the program's outdoor record book.
Amena Nelson and
Grace Galvin doubled up in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash. Nelson ran 25.17 and 56.17 to rank #4 and #2, respectively, in Mines history. Galvin posted times of 25.72 and 57.46 to write her name at #5 and #6. Also in the 200-meter dash was
Allison Comer who ran 26.27 to tie for #10 all-time at Mines. In the field,
Wyatt Tyson heaved the shot put 14.27 meters (46-10.0) and rose to #9 in the program record book.
Dale Thompson and
Ava Kowalski rounded it out in the women's pole vault as Thompson cleared 3.70 meters (12-1.5) and Kowalski soared over 3.55 meters (11-7.75). Thompson's mark improved her standing at #3 in the record book. Kowalski rose to #6.
IN THE RANKINGS
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association released its first outdoor edition of the National Track & Field Rating Index on Tuesday morning. Mines' men debuted at #25 while the women appeared on the expanded list at #31. As a reminder, the USTFCCCA's National TRFI is not a ranking but rather a predictor of national finish based on current NCAA qualifiers. Grand Valley State's men owned the top spot on their list while West Texas A&M ranked #1 on their side.
SMALL CHANGE
The NCAA made a small yet notable change for all of track & field in 2021-22. No longer will automatic qualifying times and marks for the NCAA Championships exist. Only a provisional line will be set for all events and the selection committee will choose from those meeting, or surpassing, that one mark.
STANDING IN THE HALL OF FAME
Earlier this school year, two Colorado School of Mines Cross Country and Track & Field stars were inducted into the Mines Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the 2021 class. Mack McLain and
Dr. Mark Husted entered the Hall of Fame together as two of the most decorated Orediggers of all time in any sport. McLain enters as easily the most decorated Oredigger with three individual national titles and 12 career all-America awards which are the most by any Oredigger in any sport. Husted joins him as a two-time NCAA Division II National Champion and six-time all-American as a student-athlete. Husted was also part of the coaching staff for the men's cross country national crown in 2019.
