GAME 1 - COLORADO MESA 6, MINES 3
Colorado School of Mines mounted a late rally as they battled in a 6-3 loss to open the series with Colorado Mesa in the 2022 home opener at Joe Coors, Jr. Softball Field.
Trystin Oshiro-Sano led Mines going 2-for-3 at the plate with
Grace Gonzales and
Lauren Decker driving in the Orediggers' runs.
Cassidy Chvatal and Shea Mauser dueled through a lightning-fast first three innings as the game was scoreless heading to the fourth. CMU broke through for five in that inning, however keyed by Brandi Haller's three-run home run, and Ashley Bradford homered to lead off the sixth to give the Mavericks a 6-0 lead.
Mines had no quit, though, as they chipped away with their first run in the sixth with
Kailey Morales walking and pinch runner
Emilee Sloan later scoring on
Lauren Decker's RBI poke to left. Mines got the tying run to the plate in their final at-bat, scoring two runs on
Grace Gonzales' bases-loaded, two-out single to draw the game to 6-3 before Mauser found a strikeout to end the game.
Mauser (3-1) struck out four in the complete-game win. Mines combined four pitchers as Chvatal (0-4) departed in the fourth allowing five runs;
Sadriena Rodriguez gave up one run and struck out two in 2.1 innings of relief, and
Taylor Wayne pitched a scoreless seventh.
GAME 2 - COLORADO MESA 11, MINES 0 (5 inn.)
Colorado Mesa's bats were unstoppable in the late game as they pounded out 12 hits to score 11 runs in the shutout win.
The Mavericks went ahead on Ava Fugate's first-inning home run but busted the game open with a seven-run third keyed by Ashley Bradford's second longball of the day, a three-run shot, plus pitcher Ellie Smith's two-run double.
Brandi Haller added an RBI single in the fourth and a wild pitch allowed Fugate to cross in the fifth.
CMU had a no-hitter into the fourth before
Lauren Decker singled and Lexi Semeyn doubled in that inning.
Smith (5-2) struck out three allowing two hits through five. Decker (1-4) started and was charged with the loss in 2.2 innings, with
Sadriena Rodriguez and
Taylor Wayne both solid in splitting relief innings.
