5/13/2022 8:11:00 PM

GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines student-athletes earned 85 degrees during the university's spring Commencement ceremonies held May 12 and 13 at Lockridge Arena.

Current and former Orediggers earned a total of 55 bachelor's and 30 master's degrees, with all 18 Mines teams represented. Combined with December 2021 graduates, Mines student-athletes earned 112 degrees in 2021-22.

The Class of 2022 produced impressive accomplishments in competition and in the classroom, with 15 All-Americans, 10 Academic All-Americans, 63 RMAC champions, 65 NCAA qualifiers, and six national champions crossing the stage. The graduating class was led by cross country/track & field standout Zoe Baker, who received the prestigious William D. Waltman Award, presented to a graduate who has shown the utmost integrity, scholarship and citizenship in their collegiate career, marking the third consecutive spring a student-athlete has won Commencement's top honor for a graduate.

In addition, three student-athletes - Baker in Applied Mathematics & Statistics, football's Ben Fuchs in Chemical & Biological Process Engineering, and women's basketball's Denali Pinto in Chemical & Biological Engineering, were named the outstanding graduating seniors in their departments. Three Orediggers were dual-degree recipients, with Baker receiving two bachelor's degrees in Computational and Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, cross country/track & field's Bo Raadam two in Chemical Engineering and Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, and former track & field standout Hayden Sather earning master's degrees in both Computer Science and Data Science.

On Thursday, Baker and men's basketball's Brendan Sullivan were recognized as the President's Senior Scholar-Athletes, awarded to two undergraduate degree recipients who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and the leadership qualities of an exemplary student-athlete.

Thirty undergraduates earned honors with eight graduating summa cum laude, 11 magna cum laude, and 12 cum laude.

Nine members of the Class of 2022 had an excused absence from Commencement as the Mines baseball team was competing in the RMAC Tournament in Grand Junction. The team has five undergraduate and four graduate degree recipients this year, and they were recognized at the ceremonies in Golden while holding their own with family and teammates in Grand Junction on Thursday morning.
