GOLDEN, Colo. - New artificial turf playing surfaces at Stermole Soccer Stadium and Marv Kay Stadium have reached completion ahead of preseason camps for the men's and women's soccer and football teams.
Stermole Stadium received a new AstroTurf LigaTurf surface and was complete in early July, being put to immediate use with a number of youth camps and captain's trainings since then. Marv Kay Stadium received an AstroTurf RootZone 3D field, which has been renamed Alumni Field, with the finishing touches happening this past week in time for football prospect camps on July 28 and 29. Both fields were installed by Rocky Mountain Turf Solutions of Pueblo.
Alumni of Mines Football can support the Alumni Field project thanks to a generous $250,000 matching gift from Rob and Ann McKee;

Stermole Stadium's original turf was installed in 2008, and Marv Kay Stadium's Campbell Field was installed in 2010, and both fields had reached the end of their 10-12 year lifespans. AstroTurf repurposed the old turf for use in other projects such as youth fields and indoor facilities around the country.
All three programs open their preseasons the week of Aug. 7. Women's soccer will play the first official game on their new pitch Aug. 25 when they host Texas Woman's, with men's soccer going the next day against Cal State Monterey Bay. Football's home opener is Sept. 10 against Angelo State.
