GOLDEN, Colo. - Reese McDermott's hat trick and
Laura Butler's record-setting playmaking powered a 5-0 Colorado School of Mines shutout over Midwestern State on Saturday.
McDermott scored the 17th hat trick in program history in natural fashion, putting the Orediggers (2-0-0) ahead 3-0 before
Paola Rubi and
Afton Rasco added late strikes.
Laura Butler assisted three of those goals to tie the program single-game record.
The Mustangs (0-2-0) had scoring chances in the game, but were checked by the Orediggers' second straight shutout as
Emma Carstens made three saves.
McDermott put the Orediggers ahead in the 22nd minute, finishing off a slide to her right off passes from Butler and
Ellise Putnam, highlighting a half that saw Mines unlucky to not be ahead more leading 9-4 on shots.
McDermott finished her hat trick with two goals in the span of four minutes early in the second half. In the 53rd minute, Butler sprung McDermott behind the defense for an easy finish, but McDermott had to fight for her third goal as a long punt from Carstens found its way through the midfield, and she completed a solo run into the box through multiple defenders to convert in the 57th minute.
Rubi blasted in from 20 yards off a corner two minutes later - Butler's third helper of the afternoon - and Rasco punctuated the win with a strike from the top of the box off
Eliot Edwards' assist in the 86th minute.
