First Half Goal Propels #15 Mines to Victory Over Colorado Mesa

GOLDEN, Colo. – The #15 Colorado School of Mines women's soccer team was back at Stermole Stadium Friday evening for another Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest against Colorado Mesa. The Orediggers (7-1-2, 4-0-1) went the offensive early and often testing the Mavericks' (4-5-1, 2-2-0) defense before finding the back of the net just before the end of the first half for the difference in a 1-0 victory on a cool and semi-rainy evening.

Mines wasted no time setting the tone of the match in the opening minutes, testing CMU keeper Chloe Dody early and often, firing six shots in the first 17 minutes of play, five of which were on goal but saved to keep things scoreless.

The Orediggers kept up the pressure and had three more shots in the following nine minutes of action before CMU's Mira Houck missed high over the top on the team's first try of the night. As the minutes ticked by and halftime approached, it was Mines who scored the opening tally of the night, coming by way of Katie Koehler. A free kick by Paola Rubi into the box was headed strongly by Jordan Barnhart through the fingers of Dody to a waiting Koehler, who snuck the ball into the lower right corner of goal for her third score in as many games to make it 1-0 heading into the locker room.

The second half saw chances for both teams early on following the resumption of play, but the defenses and goalies for both teams were determined to keep the scoreboard right where it was. Mines continued to fire volley after volley at Dody on the offensive end, while freshman netminder Allie Lundgren stood tall for the Orediggers in her first start of the year, recording two more saves in the period as the backline unit held RMAC scoring leader Lila Dere to just four shots for the night, two of which were on goal.

One last try from the Mavericks at an equalizer came in the 89th minute from Haley Klasner, but Lundgren's fourth save of the night all but wrapped things up as the rain continued to fall and the clock expired as the Orediggers recorded their fourth conference win of the season.
