SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The #20 Colorado School of Mines Men's Soccer team battled unbeaten Cal State San Bernardino to a 1-1 draw on Sunday at Premier Field.
Michael Sprauer accounted for the lone goal for Mines (1-1-2). Martin Garcia earned the tally for CSUSB (2-0-1) thank to an assist from Nicklaus Sullivan. The Orediggers won the battle in shots and shots on goal with 10 and eight, respectively. The Coyotes only took eight shots with four on target, but doubled the visitors in corner-kick opportunities, 6-3. In total, 21 fouls were whistled and four yellow cards were issued with two to each team.
It took Mines less than 10 minutes of action to take the lead. As the match rolled into the 10th minute, CSUSB twice failed to clear a long throw-in from
Lucas King.
Caelin David one-touched the second attempt 10 yards forward over Coyote defenders to Sprauer at the top of the penalty area. Sprauer's first touch sailed the ball over one more CSUSB defender. His second touch was a volley to the near, left post that found the back of the net for a 1-0, Oredigger lead.
Mines' advantage stood for 23 minutes until the visitors had a defensive breakdown of their own. The Orediggers earned a free kick within striking distance of the Coyote's goal. However, the CSUSB clearance after the kick ended up hitting the head of a Mines defender holding the midfield line and caroming into an empty back half with two Coyote attackers racing unabated towards the goal. The result was an equalizing tally to make it 1-1. A score that stood all the way to halftime.
The second half saw an onslaught of opportunities for both teams, starting with
Ian Kugler's shot 33 seconds into the period. He, like Sprauer, aimed for the left post, but the CSUSB goalkeeper successfully dove and sent the ball out of bounds. After that, Sprauer added another shot on goal in the 56th minute, King did the same in the 73rd minute,
Chris Seery joined the party in the 84th minute and Kugler added one more in the final minute of the match, but all were saved. Mines' goalkeeper
Brian Doherty had two second-half saves of his own to help keep the score even and give the Orediggers the draw.
