Mines Sweeps at Omaha

10/2/2023 2:45:00 PM

The first game of the season for the Mines club ice hockey team went just as planned. After a 7-hour drive to Omaha from Golden the team had little rest before taking the ice. After a hard fought first period University of Nebraska struck first with a back door goal by Josh Bedore. With 4 minutes left in the period Mines started to feel the pressure. They did not give up hope and tied up the game with 1 minute left to play in the first with a backhand from Mathew Mansfield. From then on, the game was very one sided. Mines' very own James McCall, Nick Lombardi and Nethen Cote finished off the Mavericks with one goal apiece to bring the final score to 4-1.

Mines coming off a very big first game win came into the second game hoping to leave the weekend on a high note of 2-0. The Mavericks would not give up easily though scoring first on their infamous back door passing play only 2 minutes 46 seconds into the game. Mines finding themselves in the same hole as yesterday started to dig themselves out and Scott Williams found the back of the net with 6 minutes left in the first. As the second period rolled around Mines' Nick Lombardi and Nathen Cote both buried a goal and the Maverick's Logan Mercier clapped back leading both teams into the third at 3-2 Mines. The Mavericks entered the third period with some fire and quickly scored a goal to tie up the game 3-3. The rest of the third was filled with penalties and close chances by both teams but nothing good enough to get by either goalie. This game was heading to Overtime. Overtime started with the Macericks on a one man advantage which they failed to capitalize on. Both teams exhausted from the long game used all they had to fight 3 on 3 for 2 minutes and 34 seconds more until the give and go from Scott MacDonald to Nick Lombardi who scored the game ending goal! The Mines team left Nebraska overjoyed with a 2-0 start to the season and 2 well fought games.
