GOLDEN, Colo. – Playing at home for the final time in the 2023 regular season, the #16 Colorado School of Mines women's soccer team lined up opposite Adams State Sunday afternoon under blue skies and scattered clouds at Stermole Stadium. Despite not being able to crack the scoreboard in the opening 45 minutes despite 18 shots, the Orediggers (11-2-3, 7-1-2) went on to hang up a three spot in the second half to run their winning streak to five matches, downing the Grizzlies (2-7-5, 1-6-3) by a final score of 3-0.
Continuing the theme from Friday night, the Orediggers shot the ball early, often and predominantly on target as the match got underway. Mines put up eight shots in the first 22 minutes with four going on target and being saved by Ashlyn Bartley while a fifth was a near-miss off the left post by
Ellise Putnam.
Mines kept working their offense and as a result kept getting rewarded with scoring opportunities as the half went on but were unable to turn any of those chances into goals. Three more shots from
Natalie Rouse,
Paola Rubi and
Bella Campos were all on goal, but were all saved again by Bartley while
Jolie Jiricek missed off the right post just before the half as it remained a scoreless match after 45 minutes.
That changed shortly after play resumed in the second half, as a throw in by Mines deep in the Grizzlies' own end saw
Callie Fuhr play a beautiful chip into the box for
Ava Harman, who managed to get a head on it from the penalty spot while getting taken out in mid-air by an ASU defender and tuck it just inside the far post past the reach of Bartley to take the lead in the 53rd minute.
Just over 12 minutes elapsed before the Orediggers doubled their lead to 2-0 in the 65th minute. Putnam collected a pass from
Cloey Seltzer near the far sideline just past the Mines bench area and played it into the box for
Landry Corbett, who gathered it up just outside the top of the six-yard box before finishing with the left foot just inside the right post for the goal.
Now with momentum on their side, Mines kept up the pressure on offense and were rewarded with their third goal of the afternoon in the 71st minute. Once again it was Putnam who got things going with a pass from Rubi to the top of the penalty area after a failed clear attempt. Putnam put a pair of Adams State defenders on skates and split the pair to play a ball ahead to Campos, who banged one home with off her right boot to make it a 3-0 game.
With time winding down, both teams played out the stretch with their reserves and as the clock hit triple-zero, Mines finished the day ahead on the scoreboard with a 3-0 win, three more points and a mark of 9-1-2 at home in the regular season in 2023.
