SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Looking to end the regular season on a high note, the #14 Colorado School of Mines women's soccer team was on the road one last time Sunday afternoon to take on Westminster. After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Orediggers (13-2-3, 9-1-2) got a pair of goals in the second half in near succession that proved to be the difference in the match, as they downed the Griffins (5-7-3, 3-5-2) by a final score of 2-0.
Cloey Seltzer recorded the first shot of the afternoon in the third minute with a try that missed left as the early going saw both teams struggle to find their form on offense. Westminster's Emma Geiges put a shot on goal in the 17th minute against
Sadie Wolf but the sophomore was there to make the save.
Nearly six more minutes went by before the next shot attempt again came from Seltzer, missing high over the crossbar as the Griffins' defense was able to stymie the potent Mines attack. Slowly over the closing minutes of the period, the Orediggers seemed to start finding their rhythm, getting better looks at the first goal of the day as both
Ava Harman and
Natalie Rouse were able to put up shots against keeper Brighton Jakeman, who made the save on both tries as the half came to a close with no score.
In the 57th minute, Westminster was whistled for a foul inside the penalty area as Mines sent up
Reese McDermott to take the kick. The junior didn't miss the first PK attempt of her career, blasting it past Brighton to take the lead 1-0.
That lead doubled shortly thereafter as in the 60th minute, Seltzer played a cross into the box for
Bella Campos who went full-extension to connect on a diving header attempt just inside the near post to score for the fifth match in a row and make it a two-score contest.
Westminster looked to rally and play the spoiler to end the regular season, as a pair of shots from Cassidy Orr in the final 20 minutes both made their way to Wolf but no further as the sophomore from Missouri preserved the shutout.
Laura Butler had a chance to ice things in the 86th minute with another shot on goal to try and make it 3-0, but it wasn't meant to be as the clock struck zero to see Mines come away with the win.
