GOLDEN, Colo. - The new indoor track & field season got off to a great start for Colorado School of Mines as they opened the Mines Alumni Classic at Steinhauer Fieldhouse.
Three field events - pole vault, long jump, and shot put - were on offer Friday night and it was the Oredigger vaulters picking up where they left off last year as both
Hunter Potrykus and
Hannah Miller attempted program-record heights.
Potrykus led a Mines sweep of the top four spots in the pole vault as he cleared an NCAA-provisional 5.12m before taking a crack at a would-be program record of 5.27m.
Kai Miller hit a personal best of 4.82m, also a provisional mark, for second, with
Shane Conley,
Aidan Bennett, and
Jackson Wray each topping out at 4.67m; that represented a PR for both Conley and Wray.
It was a similar story in the women's competition as three vaulters cleared NCAA provisional heights led by Miller, who topped 4.11m without a miss to win before attempting an all-conditions personal-best of 4.21m.
Dale Thompson and
Avery Herbold each got over 3.86m to finish second and third (a PR for Thompson), while
Ava Kowalski was sixth at 3.56m and
Madeline Obuchowski made her Mines debut with a 3.26m performance in ninth.
Lexye Wood made finals in the long jump and set an early-season marker of 5.71m for sixth place, with
Avery Wright finishing 11th in a large field at 5.49m. In the shot put,
Kitt Rupar led the women with a 12.59m best throw for ninth, and Wright was 12th at 11.32m. The men had
Brody Welch and
Hayden Swim finish fifth and sixth, respectively, as Welch hit 15.54m and Swim 14.73m. Freshman
Franklin Rambo debuted with a 13.70m throw for 10th.
Day 2 of the meet starts Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
