SPEARFISH, S.D. – The #11-ranked Colorado School of Mines Women's Basketball team handed Black Hills State an 87-71 loss on Saturday evening at the Young Center.
Jenna Siebert guided Mines to victory as she led the team in scoring and rebounding with 23 points and eight boards.
Ashley Steffeck was right behind, tallying 21 points and seven rebounds. Steffeck also recorded six steals, and three assists while Siebert added three assists and one block.
Loralee Stock scored 15 points and had three steals.
Shelby Nichols finished boasting 14 points and two assists.
The Orediggers (9-1, 4-0 RMAC) shot over 52 percent from the floor and committed just 10 turnovers in the victory. Black Hills State (5-3, 2-2 RMAC) earned a 37-26 rebound advantage and shot over 43 percent, but committed 18 turnovers and went 16-of-25 at the free-throw line. Mines put a padlock on its win by winning points in the paint, points off turnovers, and fast-break points. The Yellow Jackets did their best with seven three-pointers and 30 points off the bench.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Saturday's showdown in Spearfish, S.D. featured one tie and zero lead changes. Siebert was 4-for-4 from behind the arc in a dominant, 28-13 first quarter for Mines. Nichols poured in 12 points in the second quarter as the Orediggers outscored the Yellow Jackets, 25-14. That gave the visitors a 53-27 advantage at the half. Black Hills State won the third quarter by a 21-14 margin. However, Steffeck's six points in the frame helped Mines carry a 67-48 lead into the final period. Stock finished it off for the Orediggers by scoring eight points over the last 10 minutes.
