Mines Drops Saturday Doubleheader to Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Colorado School of Mines softball team continued their opening weekend excursion around South Florida Saturday afternoon, taking on Barry in the second of three doubleheaders this weekend.

After a resilient effort in a marathon extra innings affair to start the day that saw the Orediggers (0-4) with multiple chances to in the late going to secure the win, the Bucs (7-2) were able to rally for a walk-off 5-4 win before using a big inning in game two to secure the sweep by a final of 4-0.

Mines scored the first run of the day against the Bucs in the second inning, when Aubree Karraker worked a two-out walk before stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing miscue to set the table for Kendall Aragon, who delivered an RBI double to the left center gap to bring home the first run of the season.

Barry responded in the bottom of the inning in unconventional fashion. Two of the first three batters in the bottom of the inning reach base to put two in scoring position with one out. A bunt back to the circle by Jordan Ream was fielded cleanly by Taylor Wayne, who made the short flip back to Karraker who applied the tag to Hayley Pasma for the second out of the inning. Ream took a wide turn rounding first and drew a throw to second by the Orediggers, which allowed Brooke Moeller to dash home and beat the return throw after advancing to third on the bunt as the score evened at 1-1.

After a 1-2-3 top of the third, Barry looked poised to take the lead in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with two outs before Wayne was able to work out of the jam by getting a strikeout.

With momentum back in the Mines dugout, Renata Boyd sparked a two-out rally in the fourth by reaching on a bunt single before stealing second and third to set the table for Karraker, who put a ball in play to third base but the throw across for what would have been the final out of the inning was muffed by Becka Mellor and allowed Boyd to score and regain the lead.

Trailing by one in the sixth, Barry looked to replicate how they scored in the second, as with runners at second and third, Moeller dropped down a squeeze bunt with one out back to Wayne who was again quick to pounce on it and flip back to Karraker for the second out. Moeller took a wide turn rounding first but this time, Mines conceded the advance to second and held the trail runner at third before a groundout ended the inning with the lead still intact.

The Orediggers had a chance to tack on some insurance runs in the top of the seventh when Aragon and Hannah Roberts both reached base, but nothing came of it as they were both stranded aboard. Down to the final outs, Barry was able to get the tying and go-ahead runs on base by way of an error and a single with one out. They managed to tie the game on a single by Mellor into center, but the second run was cut down at the plate on a strong throw home from Emilee Sloan. Mellor was able to advance to third with two outs representing the winner run, but Lauren Decker was able to escape the inning and send the game the extra innings tied at 2-2.

Things remained even for the next four innings until Aragon delivered again in the 12th. After Boyd advanced to third after being placed at second to start the inning, the freshman singled up the middle with the infield drawn in to drive in her second run of the game and make it 3-2 Mines. Barry responded by scoring the tying run on a fielder's choice with one out following a leadoff walk and a sacrifice bunt and was able to load the bases with a chance to walk it off, but a line drive back up the box was plucked out of mid-air by a full-extension dive from Sidney Wilson, who was then able to apply the tag to double off the runner at second and send the game to the 13th inning.

Another two-out single in the top of the inning, this time from Sara Larson, was able to score Wilson as once again the Orediggers took the lead, but in the bottom of the inning, the Bucs managed to load the bases with two outs before forcing home the tying run on a hit by pitch and plating the winning run moments later on an error to take a marathon game one 5-4.

The second game of the afternoon was scoreless through two innings until Barry was able to score four runs off starter Cassidy Chvatal (0-2) by way of an RBI double, and RBI single and a two-run homerun from Rylee Lord. Sadriena Rodriguez came on in relief with two runners on and despite loading the bases with a walk, was able to escape the inning without further damage.

The next three innings came and went with no change on the scoreboard. Rodriguez shined in her 2 2/3 innings of relief work before handing the ball over to freshman Kat Miller, who worked a scoreless sixth inning in her collegiate debut.

Down to their final three outs, the Orediggers were unable to rally against Barry reliever Haelee Angelico, who took over for starter Cassandra Lee in the sixth, falling in game two by a final of 4-0.

NOTABLES
-Wayne took a no decision in game one as she worked a career-high six innings, allowing just one run on four hits in her first start of the season, striking out one and inducing 13 groundouts
-Decker (0-1) worked 6 2/3 innings in relief in game one, the second-longest outing of her career, striking out two and scattering three hits while the four runs she was charged with were all unearned

-Roberts and Larson both went a combined 4-10 in the opener
