DAVID HEMERY VALENTINE INVITATIONAL AT BOSTON UNIVERSITY [Results]
Dillon Powell reset his NCAA Division II national record in the indoor 5,000m to lead a record-shattering day for the Mines men's distance runners at Boston University.
Mines competed in three events and all three produced new program and RMAC records as
Luke Julian (mile) and
Loic Scomparin (3,000) joined Powell in making history. All three men ran all-time top-five performances in D-II, as well.Â
Running in the fast heat full of elite D-I and professional runners, Powell pushed to a massive five-second improvement on his national record set at the same meet in 2022, running 13:28.46 to place seventh overall. Powell had run 13:33.68 last year to set the NCAA, RMAC, and Mines records, and left no doubt as he ran the distance for the first time this season. It goes down as the #3 all-conditions 5K in D-II history.Â
Luke Julian became the first Oredigger to break the four-minute mile barrier, resetting his program record in the event with a 3:58.62 clocking at Boston University. Julian's time is the new NCAA #3 performance and the best time run at sea level this season; he takes more than two seconds off his previous Mines record of 4:00.81 set on the same track last year, and now adds the RMAC record. It goes down as the #5 all-time performance in NCAA D-II history, and he is only the seventh different man to run under four minutes in the history of the division.Â
Loic Scomparin ran the fastest 3,000m of the winter in NCAA Division II, breaking his own program record by nearly four seconds and setting the #3 all-time performance in D-II history with his 7:51.84 time. His previous program record of 7:55.22 was set on the same track last season; he is only the second man in D-II history to run under 7:52 as he was less than a second off the division record of 7:50.98 set last year by Lee's Christian Noble; Scomparin becomes the #2 performer in D-II history behind Noble.Â
Running late into the night in the 5K,
Duncan Fuehne ran the NCAA #10 time of the season in 13:58.37, his new collegiate best, and
Paul Knight also ran a national top-20 provisional time of 14:08.35 (the new Mines #8 all-time performance) while
John O'Malley crossed in 14:35.20.
THE GORILLA CLASSIC AT PITT STATE [Results]
Aryelle Wright reset her program 800m record, running a blazing-fast 2:09.58 to lead Mines on Pittsburg State's track on Saturday. Wright likely punched her ticket to nationals with the time, which is four-tenths faster than her previous best run on the same track at NCAA Indoors last year. She wasn't the only Oredigger recording a top time in the event as
Mackenzie Duck ran a more than two-second collegiate best in 2:10.01; Wright's time will end up #6 nationally and Duck's inside the qualifying bubble at #11 pending other results around the country as the duo placed third and fifth in the race.
Miranda Manfre ran 2:17.46 as well.
The women's 4x400 added to the records as the combo of
Randi Higashi,
Grace Galvin, Wright, and
Amena Nelson ran 3:48.90 to take a half-second off their best set just a few weeks ago in Boston. That is the NCAA #11 time of the season discounting alternate relays. The Mines men's 4x400 of
Everett Delate, Andrew Gebhardt,
Tim Thompson, and
Jonah Fallon ran a quick 3:17.43, tied for #5 in the Mines record book and the fastest by an Oredigger relay since 2018.Â
Individually, Thompson ran a collegiate best to place eighth in the men's 800m, crossing in 1:51.40 for a nearly one-second PR. He improved his NCAA provisional status by a half-second to put him somewhere around 20th nationally and launch himself into the Mines all-time top-10 at #4, the fastest performance by an Oredigger since 2016. Gebhardt placed 27th with a time of 1:55.78.Â
Nelson popped a big personal best in the 400m, running 57.11 to set the new all-time #2 time at Mines and dropping more than a second off her previous indoor best. Galvin also ran a collegiate-best 57.96 (the new #5 Mines time) and Higashi 58.57. The men's 400 saw yet another personal best time as Fallon ran 48.89, the fastest time by an Oredigger man since 2018 and the new #8 all-time performance in program history. Delate was ninth in the 60m hurdles in 8.17 seconds to round out the sprinters' day.Â
In the women's mile,
Margaux Basart ran 5:02.94, the new #10 all-time performance at Mines, and
Brin Strouse finished in 5:16.40.Â
In the field, the women's invite pole vault competition highlighted Mines' day as
Hannah Miller took second in a duel with defending national champion Kyla Davis of Pitt State and all-American Madi Wulfekotter of Central Missouri. All three women cleared 4.03m before exiting, with Miller placing second on misses.
Avery Herbold was a bar behind in fourth place, getting over 3.93m, while
Dale Thompson was ninth at 3.73m and
Ava Kowalski 11th at 3.63m.
Hunter Potrykus cleared 4.82m to tie for eighth in the men's invite pole vaultÂ
Grant Redmond cleared 2.05m to take eighth in the men's invite high jump, while
Lexye Wood placed ninth in the women's invite high jump clearing 1.58m. In the triple jump,
Claire Kintzley leapt 11.05m in the triple jump to place 13th on the women's side and
Fischer James Espiritu Argosino placed 14th in the men's event with a best mark of 13.70m.
In the circle,
Brody Welch was the top Oredigger in the men's shot put in 16th with a best mark of 15.16m, and
Arvid Veidmark IV was a spot behind him at 15.08m.
Hayden Swim threw 13.41m for 33rd.
Kitt Rupar threw 11.36m for 17th in the women's shot.Â
