ALAMOSA, Colo. – The #16-ranked Colorado School of Mines Women's Basketball team fell at the hands of Adams State on Friday night by a score of 64-60 inside Plachy Hall.
Sammy Van Sickle was the Orediggers' top performer. She scored 14 points with seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals.
Jessica Rios also scored in double digits, notching 10 points.
Megan Van de Graaf had a solid night as well, thanks to eight points, nine rebounds, and three steals. Also notable were four assists from
Josephine Howery.
Mines (21-5, 17-4 RMAC) committed 26 turnovers in the loss. Despite the high number of turnovers, Adams State (19-8, 15-6 RMAC) only had 12 steals. However, the Grizzlies played extremely clean basketball as they committed just 14 personal fouls in four quarters compared to 25 by the Orediggers. Mines also owned a 33-22 advantage on the glass and drained seven three-pointers. However, ASU made up the difference by going 20-of-26 at the free-throw line while the visitors were 9-of-13 at the charity stripe.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orediggers dominated the opening quarter, outscoring Adams State by a score of 20-9.
Sammy Van Sickle accounted for 10 of those points along with three rebounds, two blocks and one assist. After that, the Grizzlies won each of the following three quarters. While their rally took longer than speaking, typing, or writing the word pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanokoniosis, the ASU comeback did come to fruition. The Grizzlies won the second quarter, 13-17. In the third quarter, both teams combined for 44 points with Adams State earning a 25-19 edge. That gave the home team a 47-46 lead going into the final period, and it would never be surrendered.
