GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines produced more strong performances Friday on the first day of hosting the Mines Winter Classic & Multi at historic Steinhauer Fieldhouse.
New program records by
Lexye Wood in the long jump and
Hannah Miller in the pole vault led a day of historic performances by the Orediggers in their only chance to show out at home this season.
Wood became the first Oredigger woman to long jump over six meters as her 6.02m mark to open finals won the event and set a new program standard. Wood went 5.95m on her second jump and then set the record on her fourth.
Meanwhile, Miller reset her program indoor pole vault record for the second time this season with the nation's #1 vault of 4.16m to lead a night of big performances for Oredigger vaulters. Miller's previous best of 4.08 happened in December at UCCS. She wasn't the only Oredigger to go big as
Avery Herbold joined Miller as the only other woman in program history to surpass four meters with a new collegiate best of 4.06m (now the NCAA #4 height),
Dale Thompson and
Ava Kowalski set PRs at 3.81m and so did
Gabbi Varela at 3.66m as they swept the top five spots in the event.
In the men's pole vault,
Hunter Potrykus continued his run of dominance this season with another event win, clearing a new collegiate indoor best of 5.17m and making three attempts at a program-record 5.27m for the first time, upping his spot on the national performance list to #5.
Jackson Wray came in sixth at 4.32m, with
Aidan Bennett eighth at the same height.
The bulk of Friday's daytime action was spent focused on the multi events and
Avery Wright and
Sidney Walshaw shined in the five-event pentathlon. Against a large field with numerous D-I competitors, Wright scored 3,413 points to take third, and Walshaw 3,087 points for sixth, becoming just the fourth and fifth women in Mines history to cross 3,000 points in the pentathlon. Wright's day was highlighted by a 1.59m clearance in the high jump and a 9.20 time in the 60m hurdles; Walshaw's highest-scoring events were the 60m hurdles at 9.68 and a 5.53m long jump mark. Wright's performance slots in at #2 all-time at Mines (and the best since 2014) while Walshaw's is #5.
