Orediggers Rack Up Wins To Close Winter Classic

GOLDEN, Colo. - Seven event wins and three season-best NCAA provisional performances were featured on Saturday as Colorado School of Mines wrapped up the two-day Mines Winter Classic & Multi at Steinhauer Fieldhouse. 

ON THE TRACK
Garrett Halbrooks and Zack Raake highlighted Mines' men's day in the sprints as each ran collegiate-best times in the 60m dash. Halbrooks blazed to second place in the event in 6.92 seconds, tying for second all-time at Mines just three-hundreths off the program record, while Raake's fourth-place 6.94 was also a PR good for the #4 all-time performance at Mines. Halbrooks had also run 6.92 in prelims and Raake 6.98. In the 60m hurdles, Everett Delate continued his outstanding form this winter with another event win, running 7.95 in both prelims and finals which was just three-hundreths off his program-record time set last week.

Tim Thompson won the 800m in a quick 1:55.27, converting to a season-best 1:51.95 on the NCAA provisional list. Alberto Campa added to the wins with a 4:19.90 mile to lead an Oredigger pack that included Matthew Mettler (4:24.53, 3rd) and Joseph Pearlman (4:45.02, 11th); Campa's time makes him the fourth different Oredigger to hit an NCAA provisional performance in the mile this season.

For the women, a pair of event wins by Allison Comer and Aryelle Wright highlighted their afternoon on the track. Comer won the 400m dash by a hundreth of a second, running 1:01.60 for first, and Wright later ran a season-best 2:16.47 - the #14 performance nationally this season - to take the 800m with Miranda Manfre fifth (2:21.42) and Avary Catchings eighth (2:23.02). 

Grace Galvin topped three 60m sprinters in ninth at 7.97 seconds with Amena Nelson running one tick behind for 12th and Randi Higashi 15th in 8.25 seconds. In the mile, Lexi Herr led Mines with an eighth-place 5:25.86 ahead of Gabriela Kenly (13th, 5:41.13).

IN THE FIELD
Grant Redmond topped the high jump standings with a clearance of 2.08, coming in at 2.04 and clearing two bars to win. Lexye Wood was fourth in the women's event on misses as the top four competitors all cleared 1.67m; Wood went out attempting a would-be program record 1.71m. Abbi Gillespie was sixth at 1.55m.

Arvid Veidmark IV led Mines' throwers taking third in the shot put at 16.00m even. Brody Welch was fifth (15.19m) and Hayden Swim seventh (a new PR of 14.95m) with Davin Kiesby 15th (12.92m). It was a similar result in the weight throw where Veidmark was fourth at 17.32m to lead Kiesby in eighth (15.46m), Welch in 17th (13.66m), and Swim in 20th (12.89m). Kitt Rupar took sixth in the women's shot put with a 12.10m toss and ninth in the weight throw with a new collegiate best 14.31m.

In the women's triple jump, Claire Kintzley set a huge personal best to take fifth at 11.36m, a mark that jumps her to fourth all-time on the Mines top-10 list. Fischer James Espiritu Argosino was sixth in the men's triple with a top mark of 13.55m.

NEXT UP
Mines will split up next week with the distance contingent heading to Boston University and the rest of the team going to the Gorilla Classic at Pitt State.
