GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Lukas Taggart is third through 36 holes to lead Colorado School of Mines on the first day of the Hot Dirt Desert Shootout at the Golf Club of Estrella.
Mines bounced back from a morning 298 to shoot 291 in round two, tied for eighth with West Texas A&M as just six strokes separate third from ninth place.
Taggart went 29 consecutive holes without a bogey, cruising to a morning 68 and then an even-par 72 after lunch to be tied for third at -4 overall. The freshman's first round featured four birdies and 14 pars, and he had a 13-par second-round to stay in contention.
Ethan Adam and
Max Lange ended the day tied for 32nd at +5, getting there in different ways. Adam had a tough opener carding 77, but roared back with an even-par 72 in round two, while Lange was consistent at 75-74.
Carter Lolli is two shots behind them at +7 in a tie for 41st on rounds of 78 and 73, while
Jake Welch shot 82 and 76 as the non-scorer in both rounds.
Mines has four individuals in tournament led by
Jonathan Trigg, who shot a career-low 74 in the second round to rise to T50 (+10);
Owen Cornmesser shot 77-78 to be T56 (+11) while
Connor Downey and
Theodore Reitter are both T60 at +12 after Downy shot 81-75 and Reitter turned in a pair of 78s.
UCCS holds the team lead at -10 led by James Perry at the top of the leaderboard, whose exceptional first-round 64 and a second-round 70 put him out to a big lead at -10. The Midwestern State duo of Garrett Leek (-6) and Mason Mikeska (-4) among with West Texas A&M's Kolton Baber (-4) round out the top five with Taggart. Midwestern State is the only other team under par at -6.
Mines' individuals will tee off Tuesday's final round starting at 9:48 a.m. MST, with the scoring five going off beginning at 11:09 a.m.
