STANFORD, Calif. - Both Colorado School of Mines 5,000m records fell Friday as
Clare Peters and
Dillon Powell led four distance runners setting national times at the Stanford Invitational.
Looking for early national qualifying times, Peters,
Molly Maksin,
Alex Raichart, and
Dillon Powell all hit their targets as they competed against fast fields in California. Peters started the day with the new women's 5K record and Powell ended it with the men's, while both Maksin and Raichart set national top-10 times in the 5K and steeplechase, respectively.
In her outdoor debut, Peters blazed to a 16:24.50 time to improve on teammate
Zoe Baker's program 5K record by nearly three seconds. The heat saw D-II's #1, #2, and #4 times of the young outdoor season as Stanislaus State's Najwa Chouati ran 16:21.79 to lead Peters, with
Molly Maksin's 16:49.14 marking her own five-second personal best.
Making his first outdoor start after winning the NCAA title in the indoor 5K, Powell returned to the track where he set the Mines 10,000m record last year and stamped his name in the record book yet again with one of the fastest times in NCAA Division II history. Powell crossed in 13:30.93 to smash the Mines record of 13:44.38 set by Marty Andrie in 2016; that ends up as the #4 all-time performance in D-II history and is easily the fastest in the nation this season. Powell took fourth in the elite 5K Invitational heat as the only D-II runner accepted.
Raichart ran a 10:54.06 time in the 3,000m steeplechase to set another NCAA provisional mark, which put her comfortably inside the national top 10 as of Friday. Raichart held her own finishing 10th as the only D-II runner in her heat.
Friday's field event results from the CSU Pueblo Open were not available as of Friday night and will be included in Saturday's final recap of that meet.
