CHADRON, Neb. -
Andrew Kaye won the 10,000m title to start the 2023 RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship for Colorado School of Mines in Nebraska.
On a blustery Friday that held track times down, Mines still found success as they qualified seven for weekend finals and claimed a pair of medals on the opening day of the meet.
Kaye won the opening event of the meet with a big kick down the stretch to outrace UCCS' Marcus Graham in 32:04.04, running the final lap in a minute flat. Teammate
Jeremiah Vaille scored in fourth place at 32:08.20 as well.
Grace Strongman added to the medals with a bronze in the women's 10,000m, completing the race in 37:25.09.
Ashleigh Loe finishes 12th in 38:49.02.
It was a great start for the men's throwers as
Davin Kiesby and
Arvid Veidmark IV both scored in the hammer. Kiesby finished fourth with a best of 54.92m and Veidmark was a spot behind at 54.86m;
Brody Welch was 18th at 47.53m and
Hayden Swim 23rd with a throw of 43.02m.
Jennifer Jarnagin placed 19th in the javelin in 29.94m.
Through four events, freshman
Avery Wright leads the heptathlon competition by a single point, with 2971, over all-American Mica Jenrette of Colorado Mesa. Wright's day was highlighted by a personal-best 1.61m clearance in the high jump - the best in the competition - and a 25.28-second win in the 200m. She also posted marks of 10.69m in the shot put and 15.41 in the 100 hurdles.
In track prelims,
Everett Delate was the top qualifier in the 400m hurdles in a personal-best time of 53.02, with
Coulton Chan ninth (55.73) and
Elijah Quinby 10th (55.99).
Allison Comer went through in the women's hurdles in a time of 1:04.56, as well.
Luke Julian (3:54.10) and
Matt Mettler (4:00.03) qualified for finals with
Alberto Campa finishing 13th (4:01.36).
Lexi Herr went through to the women's final with a 4:37.35 race. Two Oredigger women qualified for the 400m final as
Amena Nelson ran a second-place 56.81 and
Grace Galvin was eighth at 57.54.
Randi Higashi finished 12th in 58.84.
Saturday's program will start at 9:15 a.m.
