Hot Hitting Gives Orediggers 20-4 Win at Adams State

Updated Friday, April 7, at 11 a.m. (MT) with final statistics

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team used hot hitting to fuel a 20-4 win on Thursday afternoon in the Orediggers' series opener at Adams State.

Mines found production up and down the batting order with I-Ly Hsue's 4-for-5 day leading the way. Hsue ended up scoring four times while adding three RBI and two doubles. Jackson Woolwine, Garret Nielsen, and Adam Houghtaling all had three hits apiece. One of Nielsen's hits was a home run. Woolwine and Mason Andrews combined for eight RBI in the first and second spots of the order. Also notable were four runs scored by Trent Nielsen. Woolwine, Andrews, Houghtaling, Danny McDermott, and Trent Nielsen each had at least one double as well.

On the mound, Luke Folsom (2-4) was the starting pitcher and earned the win behind 6.2 innings of solid work. He gave up just four runs (three earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Gray St. Amant finished the run-rule victory by providing 1.1 innings of work out of the bullpen. He surrendered zero runs on zero hits with one strikeout and one hit batter. Pino (0-3) of Adams State took the loss.

With the win, Mines (14-15, 10-7 RMAC) extended its win streak to six games. The Orediggers hit .455 as a team including eight doubles and one home run for a .705 slugging percentage. Adams State (9-21, 4-9 RMAC) produced a combined batting average of .303 and only struck out three times, but five errors in the field proved detrimental to the Grizzlies. Two of ASU's 10 hits went for extra bases thanks to a triple and a home run. The home pitching staff stuck out five and only walked four with five runs coming unearned due to the defensive miscues. Mines' defense was error free and the offense finished with 20 runs on 20 hits and 17 RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orediggers did their damage with three big innings. Crooked numbers in the top of the second, sixth, and eighth frames resulted in 16 runs for the visitors. Adams State's offense was highlighted by a two-run home run in the fourth inning. The Grizzlies also added a single run in the bottom of the seventh before St. Amant came in to limit the damage. Houghtaling, Trent Nielsen, Bonds, Hsue, Woolwine, and Andrews all came across the plate in the six-run second inning. Andrews plated Hsue in the fourth with Trent Nielsen and Bonds coming across in the fifth inning. That made the score 9-3. Garret Nielsen's leadoff home run in the sixth sparked a four-run frame in the sixth. It was a passed ball that brought in Adams State's final run in the bottom of the seventh. Six more runs in the top of the eighth clinched the run-rule victory.
