PUEBLO, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines minted five First-Team All-America finishes in the 10,000m to highlight the first day of the 2023 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the ThunderBowl.
Zoe Baker and
Jenna Ramsey stood on the podium after the women's race, and the trio of
Loic Scomparin,
Steven Goldy, and
Paul Knight earned top-eight spots for the men to highlight the Orediggers' evening.
Baker made history by becoming the most-awarded woman in Mines Athletics history, surpassing swimmer Mia Wood with her 12th career all-America award as she crossed in fifth place at 35.27.20. Ramsey was one spot behind, moving all the way up through the pack during the race to take sixth in 35:28.15. All four of Mines' entries were in the top 11 as
Molly Maksin closed 10th in 35:43.60 and
Holly Moser was 11th in 35:45.11, both Second-Team All-America finishers. Baker's dozen All-America awards put her into a tie with
Dylan Ko and Mack McLain for the most all-America awards in Mines history.
Meanwhile the men put three of their five entries on the awards stand led by Scomparin, whose bronze medal came in 30:15.21. Goldy was sixth in 30:19.31 and Knight eighth in 30:19.92;
Duncan Fuehne finished ninth in 30:29.66 and
Chris Cathcart was 16th in 31:28.71.
Both
Luke Julian and
Alberto Campa are into Saturday's 1,500m final as they automatically qualified in 3:50.26 and 3:50.38, respectively. Trapped on the rail with 200m to go, Julian had to make a quick shift to the outside and kicked to the finish, bringing a hard-finishing Campa with him. They are the #2 and #3 qualifiers overall.Â
The steeplechase prelims saw
Max Bonenberger squeak through to the men's final in a fantastic kick to the line as he gained two places in the final 100 meters to automatically go through by just two-hundreths of a second in 9:16.86.
Alex Raichart finished 13th in 11:01.27 in the women's race.
Avery Wright stands in 14th place (2,934 points) in the heptathlon with two of her strength events, javelin and long jump, still to come on Friday. Wright started off the meet with a personal-best 14.75 time in the 100m hurdles, a mark that stands as #2 all-time at Mines, to score 875 points. She then cleared 1.53m in the high jump, moving through the progression with five clearances from 1.41m through 1.53m to add 655 more points. In the shot put she hit 10.52m to collect 564 points, and she ran 25.52 in the 200m for 840 more.Â
Lexye Wood was one of two Orediggers in field action on Thursday, placing 13th in the long jump. Wood hit 5.92m on her first jump and also had marks of 5.77m and 5.51m. In the men's pole vault,
Hunter Potrykus was unlucky in recording no height.
FRIDAY'S SCHEDULE
Friday will see Wright wrap up the heptathlon,
Aryelle Wright and
Mackenzie Duck run the 800m prelims,
Everett Delate the 110m hurdle prelims, and Bonenberger the steeplechase final.
