5/8/2023 4:00:00 PM

TORONTO - The Toronto Argonauts have signed Colorado School of Mines cornerback Mason Pierce to their preseason camp roster ahead of the 2023 Canadian Football League season.

A captain on Mines' historic 2022 team that made the NCAA Division II national championship game, Pierce earned all-America honors from the Associated Press, D2CCA, and Don Hansen's Football Gazette after the season after producing 56 total tackles and a team-leading five interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns. Pierce ended his career as Mines' all-time leader in pass break-ups (47) and passes defended (53); he graduated as the active leader in Division II in passes defended, and had the third-most across all divisions of NCAA football. In his career, Pierce compiled 180 tackles, five tackles for loss, and six interceptions.

A native of Bulverde, Texas, Pierce was a rare true freshman earning playing time in 2018 and locked down the cornerback job in 2019, starting 43 times in 49 career appearances. He was also a dangerous return specialist over his career, averaging 15.9 yards per punt return on 40 attempts during the last two seasons. Pierce was a three-time all-RMAC and two-time all-region selection.

Pierce received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in December 2022.

The Argonauts, winners of the 2022 Grey Cup, open their preseason training camp at the University of Guelph on May 10.
