GOLDEN, Colo. – Back at home and in search of their first RMAC win of the new year, the #20 Colorado School of Mines women's soccer team lined up opposite Black Hills State Friday night on the first day of Homecoming weekend and delivered a performance for the record books. The Orediggers (5-2-2, 1-1-1) controlled the match from whistle to whistle, scoring five times in the first half and adding another three in the second to down the Yellow Jackets (3-5-0, 1-2-0) 8-0.
It was all Mines from the opening whistle, as the home team took control early and got the offense going early and often, putting up three shots in a span of 66 seconds in the fifth minute before
Reese McDermott scored the first goal of the night in the seventh, taking a pass between defenders from
Afton Rasco after a BHSU turnover deep in their own end and finding the back of the net to make it 1-0 Mines early.
It took less than two minutes for the Orediggers to double their lead to 2-0, when
Natalie Rouse connected with a header on a corner kick from
Landry Corbett, going top shelf on the near post as the floodgates started to open.
The Yellow Jackets' lone shot of the period came in the 16th minute, when Makaiah Carlson looked to sneak one past
Sadie Wolf just inside the far post, but the Mines sophomore was there to make the save. The shots kept coming for the Orediggers, as some near misses and some saves were followed by another goal by McDermott, who stole the ball away from a BHSU defender near the midline before racing down the field, making a move on the goalie Morgan Wood and scoring a nearly uncontested goal for her second of the night in the 27th minute.
Freshman
Bella Campos got in on the action within three minutes of checking into the match, as after having a goal called back for being offsides, she got together with
Ellise Putnam, who forced a turnover and charged up field to play a beautiful ball ahead through traffic where Campos was able to finish with the right foot from about 12 yards out to make it 4-0 in the 34th minute.
The final goal of the half came on a defensive miscue by the Yellow Jackets, as an attempt to play the ball back to the keeper from near midfield in the 42nd minute misfired and saw it roll across the line for an own goal to make it 5-0, as that would be the score after 45 minutes of play.
With two goals to her credit already, it didn't take McDermott long to find her third at the start of the second half, teaming up with Putnam to make it 6-0, finishing with the right foot on a pass to the top of the penalty area in the 48th minute. The night's seventh goal wasn't far behind, as in the 55th minute, as
Emily O'Connor played a ball in from the far side to the top of the box for Putnam, who one-touched it through a pair of defenders to Campos for the finish as she scored her second goal of the evening.
Emma Carstens, making her season debut in goal in the second half, made her only save of the night in the 58th minute against Katy Vinton as the rest of the half saw both sides empty their benches and play out the stretch. One of those substitutions of the Orediggers,
Kate Clady, concluded scoring matters in the 88th minute, as she was able to finish off a pass into the box from the near side end line by
Kaitlyn Manalili with a header down past the goalie to make it 8-0 and get Mines into the win column in conference play.
