Two Wins Highlight Mines’ First Day in California

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Colorado School of Mines Volleyball team started its trip to California with a pair of wins against St. Edward's and Concordia Irvine on opening day of The Cougar Classic hosted by Cal State San Marcos. The Orediggers swept SEU and toppled CUI in four sets.
 
Rose Stuewe won the day by hammering out 28 kills on .323 hitting on the outside. Right behind Stuewe was Madison Glassco who put up 23 kills and two blocks. Presley Powell captained the offense with 79 assists at a clip of 11.29 assists per set. Renata Bolado Corona won the service game by dishing out four aces. On defense, Jada Price averaged over four digs per set. Allison Jansen was a champion at the net, as evidenced by six total blocks.
 
As a team, Mines (4-2) hit .266 on the attack while holding St. Edward's (1-5) and Concordia Irvine (3-4) to a combined hitting percentage of .116. The Orediggers also won in the back row thanks to 113 total digs compared to 86 digs from the opposition. Narrow margins in the service game and block game went to the opposition, but Mines still recorded its first sweep of the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first match of the day was a regional showdown between Mines and St. Edward's. On offense, Stuewe won the day with 10 kills on .320 hitting. She only committed two errors on the outside. Additionally, Presley Powell posted 32 assists, eight digs, two aces, two kills and zero errors. On defense, Jada Price had 13 digs and Shannon Perna had 10 digs. That helped the Orediggers hold the Hilltoppers to 18 points in game one, 20 points in game two, and 18 points in game three.
 
Stuewe and Madison Glassco teamed up to dominate Mines' second match of the day. Those two Orediggers combined for 33 kills while hitting over .390. Powell averaged nearly 12.00 assists per set. Allison Jansen stepped up on defense with five total blocks. Price, Perna, and Meghan Slaninka all turned in double-digit dig numbers. The second match of the day clinched Mines' out-hitting of each opponent in all sets played.
 
NOTABLES
- Mines is now 2-1 in the all-time series against St. Edward's.
- The Orediggers won their very first match ever played against Concordia Irvine.
- Stuewe's performance in the second match of the day put her over 1,000 kills for her career.
- Stuewe also went over 200 digs for her career.
- Head Coach Jamie Magalei now boasts a career record of 344-112 in her 16th season at the helm.
